I draw on IFS, narrative, and mindfulness where they serve you.
You've built a life that looks right from the outside. And yet...maybe you've been living according to a script you never actually chose - the right career, the right role, the right version of yourself for everyone else in the room. You're capable, driven, and deeply self-aware. You've done enough reading and therapy to know yourself pretty well, but something still isn't adding up. There's a gap between the life you're living and the life you sense is possible - and it's getting harder to ignore. That gap is exactly where our work begins.

I have extensive training in Internal Family Systems ( IFS), however I always match my approach to the needs of the client or family I'm supporting.
Immediate Openings! Does your child dance to the beat of a different drum? Maybe you’ve watched them struggle to “find their people,” gain acceptance, and hit their stride. They’re sensitive, easily overwhelmed, and anxious. Or maybe YOU identify with this description. Burned out, tired, and confused? You try so hard to understand yourself or your child, but you’re hitting a wall and feeling frustrated. Why does life feel so complicated? Is it your fault? Are you missing something? You're tired of searching online for answers. You know it's time to reach out for help!

I earned certification in EMDR and obtained advanced clinical training in other evidence-based modalities, including Exposure & Response Prevention, Internal Family Systems, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.
I am Meghan McHaney, an LCSW in IL, and an LICSW in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. I specialize in treating PTSD, but love working with a variety of people! Once I earned my clinical license, therapy became my passion. I became obsessed with how people heal. I read everything I could about what helps and what doesn’t. My goal of providing the most up to date, effective treatment led me to seek further education, certifications, and mentorship from trauma experts.

Utilizing Mindfulness, Somatic and IFS skills, I try to incorporate humor and connection in my sessions.
Have you been feeling stuck between who you were and who you could become? Maybe you are just looking to connect with your authentic self. Perhaps you’ve been carrying anxiety, second-guessing yourself, dealing with relationship or family pressures, or navigating big transitions. I am here to help you step out of survival mode and into a place of alignment, clarity, connection, and confidence. Through my background working in wilderness therapy and high-school counseling, I learned that no path to healing is linear. This has given me a unique blend of hands-on, experiential insight to my work with both teens (16+) and adults.

Most people who visit a therapist know that there is something they want to change, but they may not know how. Sometimes feelings of anxiety or depression, problems with relationships, challenges at work, or other social difficulties are difficult to understand and resolve without help. In therapy, my goal is to help you foster greater self-understanding and develop strategies to live a more fulfilling life.

I’m a trauma specialist trained and experienced in treating severe PTSD, mood disorders and suicidal ideation. I love working with first responders, health care workers, victims of crime, survivors of natural disasters, and survivors of abuse or neglect. My interactive, laid-back, upfront style helps my clients feel at ease. Alfred Adler, an early pioneer of psychotherapy says, "Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another and feeling with the heart of another." This best describes my approach to therapy. I have a natural authentic interest in the stories of others and the experiences they bring in.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapists
What is Internal Family Systems therapy?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.

How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?
An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.

Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?
IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.

How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
