Psychotherapy is a bit like archeology. We must carefully excavate the psychological layers in order to unearth and analyze the artifacts of ones experience. Then, we can interpret the findings to achieve healing, create change, and address challenges. At Gray Matters, we help clients reach their mental health and wellness goals using a variety of modalities that are catered to meet the client's particular needs. This is not a place to merely 'vent' about problems. Here, clients are active participants in identifying issues and taking the necessary steps to resolve those issues both during and in-between sessions.

I do not believe that one size fits all for many things in life, including therapy, which makes finding the right therapist feel challenging. I believe the foundation for meaningful change begins with the relationship and trust established between a client and therapist. I bring compassion, understanding, and an individualized approach to therapy with hopes of establishing that rapport and trust needed to make clients feel safe enough to share their most vulnerable parts of themselves. I view the process as a collaborative journey, guided with empathy, authenticity, and a deep respect for the lived experiences of my clients.

During these unprecedented times, conditions are ideal for issues to rise and insist on being attended to. Symptoms of depression and anxiety are clues from the body that the existing state is no longer sustainable. I view this as an opportunity rather than a dilemma or tragedy. My role is to assist in navigating this landscape and normalize the emotions that accompany this courageous work. My goal is to assist each client in revealing childhood wiring that is creating difficulties in present time. The intent is to allow authenticity and agency to emerge from unconscious reactions and behavior determined by family patterning.

I work primarily with individuals struggling with grief: whether related to loss around death, illness, divorce or a break-up; as well as job termination and retirement. Life transitions of many kinds usually entail a grieving process-even positive ones such as a new marriage, career change, graduation from high school or college, a geographic move or the birth of a child. With these changes, you may feel uneasy that you are not as happy as you "should be". We are always writing the story of our lives. What do you want more of? What needs to be let go? I offer supportive space for that creative process; to reach for a bigger dream.

Looking for a down to earth, kind and open-minded therapist? If so, we might be a great fit! Counseling can be a great tool for self-improvement. Many of us may find ourselves faced with overwhelming stress, anxiety, depression, and relationship issues in these challenging times. Counseling can be a safe place to process this and a way to discover inner resilience. I especially enjoy working with creative, artistic, intuitive and spiritual individuals. My style is highly interactive and conversational where we will help to identify underlying issues, determine where these originated and help to improve your level of functioning.

Supporting individuals toward their sense of wholeness is my therapeutic purpose. Every individual has their own journey; a path of unfolding understanding through their processes of the body, mind and emotion. My therapeutic approach is integrative, meaning the whole being - one's body, emotion, cognition and the being's essence (spirit/soul) are important variables in the process of wellness and healing. When appropriate, and consent is given, therapeutic touch is a supportive modality to support the Client in accessing bodily held, maladaptive and traumatic experiences.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
