I offer an array of family therapy, attachment-based therapy, CBT, and parenting skills training to help families and children achieve their goals.
I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. I help children, parents, and couples overcome obstacles, improve relationships, and better their lives. Starting a family can be one of the most exciting and fulfilling experiences, but when things do not go according to plan, this can be one of the biggest struggles for parents and children. I help families uncover the issues that contribute to the problem and find solutions to help you obtain the vision you always wanted for your child and your family.

I'm a certified EMDR therapist licensed in NH, ME and MA. My passions are trauma, young adults, adults, the LGBTQ+ community & the slightly eccentric and off-beat. I have no interest in being a cookie cutter, blank slate type therapist! If that’s what you’re looking for I may not for you. A comfortable, safe connection is top priority. I have experience providing therapy in college counseling and this population is near to my heart. I'm an LGBTQ+ affirming therapist, ally to the community and enjoy working with people as they discover who they are and how to live authentically.

Life is filled with many ups and many downs. Unfortunately, it is the downs that we tend to focus on which can lead us to feel overwhelmed, stressed, and hopeless. I respect and validate the struggles my clients have endured and help them realize they have the ability to make change and live a better life. My goal is for my clients to gain knowledge, coping strategies, and to feel empowered to overcome challenges. I work with my clients to make treatment as simple, realistic, and light hearted as possible.

I'm excited that a part of you is curious about ways to get support for whatever life has thrown at you. This is a puzzling time for most! There may be a part of us that is anxious, depressed, critical, scared or many other sensations that can take a hold of us. For years and even decades we have formed our own ways of dealing with things with the tools we had available. There is help and support for all of us from the world outside of us and from the world within us. Mental health and addiction are quiet illnesses that we often don't want to share or acknowledge.

If so I would love to hear from you in order to see if I am a good fit to help. I love working with all types of family systems, currently with couples or adult individuals. I believe that part of moving forward towards change is supporting my clients in finding the solutions within themselves.

At times, we find ourselves in seasons of life where we may feel disoriented and easily overwhelmed. We can begin questioning ourselves and wondering if we’ve chartered off course or lost our way. During challenging times, it can be easy to feel overburdened by heavy emotions, intrusive thoughts, and the simple tasks of everyday life. Navigating relationships, careers, finances, and other responsibilities can pile up and take their toll on our well-being.

What if anxiety, depression, anger, and negative thinking aren't symptoms, but strategies? What if we considered those emotions, thoughts, and body sensations to be trailheads to discover parts of us that are working hard to protect us and to navigate a challenging world filled with stressors and complicated relationships? And what if we considered the roles those parts are playing and directed them instead of being controlled by them?

DEC 2022-APRIL 2023: I am currently on maternity leave and unable to accept new clients. I work with children (ages 10 and up), teens, young adults, and families. I especially enjoy helping young adults who feel stuck or overwhelmed in their day-to-day life despite being hardworking and empathetic. Often, my clients are looking to be heard, validated, and reminded that they are the experts on themselves and their experiences have shaped who they are today. If you’re feeling down, stressed or not quite like yourself, please know that change is possible.

I enjoy working with children (ages 5 and up), teens, young adults, and families that are experiencing a variety of life's struggles. Feeling isolated, down, overwhelmed, anxious, and stuck in negative patterns in our relationships are commonplace in these times. Many people are dealing with the impact of traumatic events that have occurred in their lives. We can work collaboratively to deal with the emotional challenges and obstacles that are causing distress and work towards restoring balance and happiness in your life.

I currently have a waitlist for minors but do have limited daytime availability for adults. To get started, complete our screening form found on our website at www.alliancementalhealth.org. In my practice, I have worked with a wide range of clients, from adults to children, including couples and families. I'm trained in a wide range of therapeutic techniques and styles, but feel most at home using a combination of client-centered and cognitive-behavioral therapy. I believe that at its core, therapy is forming a positive relationship, and then using that relationship to motivate and reinforce healing and change.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
