I know the search for a therapist can be difficult! You may be concerned about finding a good match or understanding your new therapist’s style. My approach to treatment involves building the relationship first to create a comfortable environment. I believe therapy should go at your pace and your level of comfort. My style is supportive with a touch of humor! I think laughing and smiling can make the process of therapy more enjoyable.

Accepting new MALE Patients! Trauma. It comes in many shapes and sizes. It affects everyone in different ways, and the effects can be devastating to your self-esteem, physical and mental health, and your life. You can feel angry, vengeful, depressed, withdrawn, alone, misunderstood. Trauma, in any form, alters us in mostly negative ways; and it doesn’t have to be that way. The first step in healing is to talk to someone you trust. Someone who makes you feel heard, safe, secure. Someone who accepts you unconditionally and seeks to understand so they can help you put those experiences in the past.

Hello! My name is Kayla and I am now utilizing EMDR and found that this modality of therapy can be very impactful to all areas of mental health needs. I am currently taking on couples and individuals. While pursuing my degree I was able to work with folks diagnosed with severe persistent mental illness, co-occurring disorders, and substance use disorders. I interned with an intensive outpatient program for addictions, and co-occurring disorders where I utilized my skills motivational interviewing (MI), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I enjoy working with young adults, and adults.

Are you someone going through the journey of life and feel something isn't aligning correctly to your desired path? You sit there with your thoughts and keep coming back to that unexplored aspect of yourself that keeps impeding your own personal progress. You've tried several different things to try to improve your situation, but your efforts continue to fail no matter what you try. Regardless of your situation, therapy has either been something you've avoided or tried in the past with limited results. If this resonates with you, know you are not alone in this experience.

Pregnancy can be one of the most wonderful and stressful times in a woman’s life with enormous changes in family dynamics and relationships. Whether a new parent or care taker, or experiencing the tragedy of interrupted pregnancy or loss, expectations for a new mother can be very high and too often dismissive of the unique stressors involved with making a new human. When unpredicted changes happen, people can feel alone, isolated, and afraid to give voice to their vulnerabilities. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with extensive experience in working with the perinatal and first responder population. PSI certified.

Life is hard. It did not come with a manual so we would know what to do when we are struggling. Knowing that there are people out there that can help is what makes therapy so important. I’ve had the pleasure of working with individuals, professionals, and families to address different mental health illnesses for the past five years. I believe that the best kind of therapy is one in which I work with you to identify your goals in life, utilize your strengths, and come up with a plan to make your best self a reality.

Bipolar Disorder Therapists

What is the most successful approach to treating bipolar disorder?

Living with bipolar disorder can be challenging, and a number of therapies have been found effective in providing support to patients as they gain the skills to understand and manage the disorder. Family-focused therapy is often helpful for children and teens (the majority of cases develop before age 19); it aims to minimize mood cycling by improving family communication and reducing conflict. It also helps young people navigate the developmental challenges the disorder can create. Cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and variants such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) help patients manage the thoughts and feelings that influence bipolar mood swings as well as develop specific behavioral strategies to counteract them.

What happens in therapy for bipolar disorder?

Because the patterns of mood switching and its triggers differ for each person and can change over time, mood tracking or monitoring becomes a basic way patients learn about the nature of their condition. One of the most common features of therapy is finding a workable method of mood monitoring, in which patients track their daily activities and rate their moods, then use the findings to adjust routines accordingly. Patients learn ways of handling the many stresses that arise in life so that they do not trigger mood swings.

What kinds of problems does therapy help with?

Like many other mental health disorders, BPD is heavily influenced by stress; therapy provides skills for coping with stressors of all kinds. Therapy is extremely important for helping individuals identify the situations that may trigger mood switching, so that mood swings can be prevented. Therapy may especially target recognition of the early stages of mood change so that they can be managed. In addition, therapy helps patients deal with the significant amount of turbulence the disorder can create in relationships and in work life.

What is the goal of therapy for bipolar disorder?

Therapy helps patients set up their lives to maintain stability so that their mood isn’t constantly threatened by daily events. Perhaps the first task of therapy is to educate people about the nature of the disorder. At the same time, a primary goal of therapy is to enhance adherence to drug treatment. Extended periods of mood stability can prompt patients to discontinue medication, triggering relapse, while the early phases of manic episodes can feel so energizing that patients stop medication, ushering in full-blown mania and the altered self-perception that can lead to destructive behaviors. Another major goal of therapy is to understand one’s mood patterns so as to minimize both the frequency and intensity of mood cycling.
