With 30 years of experience treating trauma and grief, I find that Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing provides relief more rapidly than traditional talk therapies.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy is an Evidence Based Practice that accelerates healing with trauma, disturbing events, grief and negative messages from the past. Recovery is possible from trauma affecting self-esteem, anxiety, depression, interpersonal relationships and our body's learned distress. EMDR also enhances peak performance.

I have expertise in a wide variety of therapeutic techniques (including Narrative Therapy, couples therapy, grief therapy and DBT) and will tailor my approach to your particular situation.
I have been working as a therapist and clinical supervisor for more than thirty years. I love helping people discover their hidden skills, strengths and values which may have become lost in life’s struggles. Whatever the issue, my job is to assist you in realizing you have the capacity to untangle and manage whatever brings you to my office. My approach involves separating the person from the problem; helping people manage the kinds of negative thoughts we all have which can increase stress, tell us bad things about ourselves, or convince us to do things that are not in our best interest.

This trauma could be a single event, years of smaller incidents, a negative self- statement that's been with you forever, or a loss of some kind.
In this small town area in the small state of Vermont, confidentiality can be an issue for professional people in the Medical/Health field. I hold strong confidentiality standards to reduce risk for our healthcare workforce and others who might shy away from getting help because they don't want to feel exposed.

I have developed a particular passion for working with individuals navigating trauma and grief, which arose out of my work counseling adolescents and teens in foster care.
My approach as a therapist is warm, authentic, and holistic - with a healthy dose of humor! I believe therapy should be tailored to fit the individual, and as such draw from a blend of techniques and modalities depending on the unique needs and nature of the client. I am trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and am currently undergoing training in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), an evidence-based trauma treatment.

I specialize in anxiety, OCD, PTSD/trauma, relational wounds, and the kind of existential spiraling that makes you question your place in the world. I work best with clients who are ready to dive in - people who show up with curiosity, bring material to explore, and aren’t afraid of a little irreverence.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
