Quality of life is something for which we all strive and can include social and interpersonal, occupational, mental, and physical well-being. We all have the capacity to improve the quality of life, but sometimes this involves making some changes. Changes may include altering our situation or responding differently to things that come up in our lives. Change can be difficult, maybe because we do not know what needs to change or because we are trying to make those changes without support. Dr. Moquin helps you to identify what you want to change and supports you in making those changes.

A key to the effectiveness of therapy is the relationship itself; it's important to me that you feel accepted for exactly who you are at this moment.
I believe that every individual has a unique set of genetics and experiences that combine to make them who they are in the present moment, and that every person is valuable and deserving of a life well lived. I help people reflect on all of the things influencing who they are, including culture, religion, gender, location, and social situations.

As a licensed couple and family therapist, I consider clients and their behaviors, motivations and values as rooted in, and influenced by, their various personal identities, current events, and unique upbringing and relational experiences.
When I work with clients who have been in therapy for a long time, we often discover missing pieces of the puzzle of their current struggles. I think this is, in part, because I use assessment tools that reach deep and wide into client's present and past to find threads and narratives that make new connections previously missed by more focused approaches.

FAQ - About Couples Therapy
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
