Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) Therapists in Amherst, NH
Taking the first step toward therapy can feel difficult, but you don't have to face life's challenges alone. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, depression, stress, relationship challenges, life transitions or feeling stuck, if you believe I'm a good "fit" for you, I'd be honored to support you. Research consistently shows that feeling understood, respected, and genuinely "heard" by your therapist is one of the strongest predictors of a positive outcome.

I am a licensed psychologist who works with teens, college students, young adults, and parents. My practice focuses on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and my goal is to help people build skills to manage things like anxiety, school/college stress, ADHD, and chronic medical conditions. I also provide Parent Management Training for parents of school-age children. No matter who I’m working with, my style is always friendly and warm. Our work together, and CBT in general, is grounded in evidence-based treatment - meaning decades of research show that this approach works. It takes time and effort, but it also leads to real change.

At the foundation of my practice lies a belief in universal human resilience. Struggles with anxiety, depression, managing relationships and emotions, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), or trauma create a sense of disconnect from your own ability to learn, adapt, and grow. I believe that human suffering happens when the way we live our lives falls out of alignment with our internal compass. We are inherently driven to self-actualize and become the best version possible of ourselves; however, the reality is that we live in a very complex world that often steers us away from what we value. We often fall into this trap and begin to chase what society deems valuable, while being convinced that it's our true calling. This behavioral pattern is often piloted by our anxieties and relational trauma, which is what I am most fluent in, as a fellow human first, and a therapist second.

Do I need exposure and response prevention therapy?
Many clients decide to seek help for obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors when these symptoms are distressing enough to disrupt everyday life. Any thoughts or behaviors that cause friction in close relationships are also worth addressing. In addition, the client’s symptoms don’t have to be severe for them to benefit from ERP therapy.
Is exposure and response prevention therapy part of cognitive behavioral therapy?
Exposure and response prevention is one specific type of CBT that focuses on behavioral change in response to triggering stimuli. It is related to exposure therapy but adds an additional component of preventing compulsive and harmful responses.
How long does exposure and response prevention therapy take?
While every patient is different, exposure and response prevention therapy typically lasts around 12 sessions, although some treatments can take longer. A therapist will determine if the treatment is complete based on how the client faces their fears, particularly the strongest ones. When a client feels less anxiety about stimuli that once evoked terror or distress, that is generally an indication that they are nearing the end of ERP therapy.
What are the limitations of exposure and response prevention therapy?
The most common pitfalls of exposure and response prevention therapy include not addressing a client’s core fears, allowing the client to avoid their most distressing stimuli, and using imaginary exposure when the client requires real-life exposure (and vice versa). ERP therapy is most effective when the client commits to the full course of treatment; if the client stops early or doesn’t practice what they have learned outside of therapy sessions, they are less likely to have successful outcomes.
