Our lead psychologists are Dr. Catherine Gardner and Dr. Andrea Hirallal. Dr. Andrea Hiralall is a Licensed Psychologist and Certified School Psychologist specializing in the assessment and treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders. Next Step Center's services include: autism assessments, diagnostic services (LD, ADHD, Memory, mood), Independent Educational Evaluation, neuropsychological assessments and more. For any psychological concern (autism,LD, ADHD, memory, mood), it is important to have an accurate diagnosis and comprehensive treatment plan in a timely manner. We provide complete assessments designed to give you answers regarding diagnosis and recommendations for what should happen next; and we give you answers in weeks-not months. In many assessment centers, the waitlist can be over a year. For Autism, we use tools such as the ADOS-II ("gold standard") in addition to gathering a full personal history and reviewing all relevant documentation. In addition to these clinical determinations, we offer Independent Educational Evaluations. Under IDEA (Individuals with Disability Education Act), parents of a child with am IEP have the right to obtain an independent educational evaluation of their child, by an evaluator not employed by the public agency responsible for the child's education. At Next Steps, our licensed clinicians will work with you to provide a holistic and comprehensive assessment to give you a better understanding of your child's specific needs.
Your first appointment is conducted in person or by phone and is an opportunity to discuss concerns and determine a plan for the neuropsychological assessment process. Testing is typically conducted in one full day with a break for lunch or may be broken into two half-day sessions. Testing involves a range of tasks, each designed to measure an aspect of cognitive functioning. Tasks will vary depending on the ability being measured. This can include assessing memory by repeating back numbers or listening to stories and repeating them. Other activities might include putting together puzzles or solving verbal analogies. After the data has been analyzed you will have a feedback session to discuss test results of the evaluation process and any diagnosis. At this session, recommendations for next steps will be discussed.
