I am a Queer-identified therapist with over 20 years of experience working with diverse Transgender, Queer, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Gay identified individuals. My style is warm, active, and authentic. Starting therapy is hard, so my priority in early sessions is for you to feel relaxed, understood, and comfortable. Your laughter and questions are welcomed. With a background in LGBTQ+ public health, I am sensitive to the challenges and stressors that come with living outside cisgender/hetero norms. I also value subjugated knowledge - our wisdom from not fitting into the dominant culture.

I have been working with the Transgender/Gender Variant community since 1999.
My therapy perspective is as diverse as the community I serve. My work with individuals is geared toward strengthening their sense of self. I also facilitate peer support groups and small intimate therapeutic groups. My therapeutic model is a combination of Rogerian (person-centered therapy), and the Empowerment Approach (the connection between "social and economic justice" and "individual pain and suffering"). Family Systems Theory (connected to a living system); and Feminist Theory (gender and related concepts remain central to feminist social work theory). With this blend, the entire overarching concepts are framed.

Are you a queer, trans, non-binary, or gender expansive person exploring gender/sexuality while coping with homophobia and/or transphobia? If you are TGNC, do you find yourself experiencing gender dysphoria and also want to explore gender euphoria? In a cishet-centered world, it can be difficult to prioritize queer joy and safety. Regardless of where or how you fit into the LGBTQIA+ community, my hope is that we can start that prioritization process together while also holding space for the hard stuff. As a therapist, I believe that you are the expert in your own life. My aim is to listen and provide warmth, patience, and tools.

As a queer and transgender person, I understand the importance of having a safe and affirming space for self-exploration and strive to create a space without judgement.
One of the few certainties of life is change, which can come with excitement but also uncertainty and hardship. Whether you are experiencing the stressors of adolescence or young adulthood, confronting relationship issues, or wanting to examine your inner world, therapy can be a useful tool in navigating life transitions. I’m particularly interested in exploring issues surrounding anxiety, depression, relationships, self-worth, grief, gender identity, and sexuality. Together we can discover your wants and needs and take action towards reaching your goals.

As a transgender woman who grew up in a politically and religiously conservative environment, I understand how daunting change and healing can be.
How do you make sense of your life and who you are? How do you move forward after painful experiences? What if you're not who you thought you were? Whether you feel stuck, disconnected, or burdened by parts of yourself you’ve been taught to hide, I offer a curious and compassionate space to slow down, process your experiences, and explore the patterns shaping your life. Together, we’ll uncover new possibilities and move toward a life that feels more true, connected, and whole. We’ll explore the parts of yourself that feel hidden or unacknowledged and figure out how they might fit into the story of you.

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
