If you're someone who needs help with managing their anxiety, processing past trauma (have PTSD), and/or sexual abuse, I am here to help!
Do you feel disconnected from those around you? Like, no one really knows what's going on inside your head or that there is a constant anxiety always following you? Have you tried talk therapy before and it felt nice to vent, but it didn't help you heal in the way you were hoping to?

Welcome! I am a NJ licensed psychotherapist with 20+ years of experience assisting individuals with a wide array of issues. Are you experiencing the discomfort of severe anxiety, general sadness, frustration, disappointment, or low self-esteem? It can be difficult to resolve issues on our own because we sometimes lack the objectivity, insight, and strategies needed to make change happen or just to feel better.

I am EMDR trained and am certified in DBT and have experience working with survivors of childhood abuse and sexual assault.
"How did I get here?" It's a question many of us have asked ourselves in the course of our lives. Sometimes "here" is a frustrating, sad, or even scary place. The question we may ask ourselves is, "How do I get to where I want to be?" Sometimes the answer lies in a place where we can receive nonjudgmental feedback and guidance to help us on our journey. I am passionate about helping people get to the place they want to be in their lives-wherever that might be.

Life is a journey. Some days the road is smooth, unobstructed and paved with optimism. Other days the path is rocky, full of twists and turns. Along the way, everyone experiences setbacks and struggles. No two people are alike because we process, experience and react to emotions and events differently. I believe in tailoring my therapy and providing each patient I see with an individualized approach and plan. Whether you are returning to therapy or just starting, know that you are taking a brave and honest first step.

I have a passion for working with survivors of gender based violence including domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, stalking, and bullying.
The therapeutic relationship between a therapist and client is unique and extremely important. My name is Brittany Feghali and I truly care about each and every client and seek to validate, empathize with, and empower each one. Therapy is not “one-size-fits-all,” therefore I incorporate various therapeutic interventions into sessions with individuals including Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (DBT for PTSD), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), etc.

I specialize working with trauma, sexual abuse, women's issues, and domestic violence, particularly in immigrant populations.
Honestly, you've probably looked through many provider profiles by now and are wondering who to pick. It can be a tough decision and so I offer a 15-30 minute screening phone call to help decide if we would be a good fit for each other. I'll answer any questions that you may have and will refer you to another provider if I believe that they will be better suited to meet your mental health needs. I am person-centered and will be happy to serve you along this journey, making sure that your wants and needs are heard and making sure that you are the priority in your own treatment.

My areas of interest include: documented and undocumented immigration experience, grief and loss, trauma, sexual abuse, physical abuse and/ or neglect, relationship problems, mood disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and adjustment disorders.
I am interested in helping and in understanding. My ideal client would be someone, who is willing to take the necessary time to educate me about him or herself, and who would be willing to reflect on events involved in and outside of the therapy session. Relationships matter. I can provide advice, can problem solve, but prefer to work in a relational, psychodynamic approach, where together we can figure things out. I am an immigrant, who believes everyone can benefit from building a positive therapeutic relationship, where problems can be worked through and their meanings understood. Due to COVID, I also offer Telehealth.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
