Finding a therapist you can connect with can be overwhelming and feel like a daunting process. In a world that has conditioned you to live an unconscious life, self-reflection and building your intuition is an act of rebellion. You may struggle to find meaning, balance, & peace within the chaos of living. Life inherently involves suffering, and sometimes navigating those big life transitions, traumas, general feelings of anxiousness or lack of interest in life can get overwhelming. The choice to go to therapy is a radical act of self-care, bravery, and accountability.

For over 35 years I have helped individuals who are struggling with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, marital conflict and any other issues contributing to distress. Because I have been in private practice for decades, I have had the benefit of having past clients keeping me informed of their progress, sharing their joys and triumphs through the years.

Hey everyone! I'm Janell and I first want to congratulate you on being brave enough to seek professional support. Self-care and mental health can be scary and sometimes we feel there is still a HUGE stigma surrounding psychology. I was born and raised in northern New Jersey and my main goals are established in further giving back to the individuals in our communities. I love using mindfulness and self-care to help people heal and ultimately feel whole. It is important to understand an individuals level of readiness in order to clear the path for powerful, meaningful change. I create a judgement free environment to promote openness.

Accepting new clients! Are you feeling hopeless and even considering divorce? Are you drained from fighting with your partner? It is likely a different topic each time, but the pattern of the arguments feels the same. They leave you feeling unheard, misunderstood, and maybe rejected and hurt. Or, perhaps, you’re in a relationship others envy because on the outside, you appear to get along so well. But behind closed doors, there is no connection, fun or intimacy. Work, kids, or other stressors drain your time and energy, and you do little more with your partner than fall asleep next to them exhausted at the end of the day.

Have you and your partner been feeling stuck and wondering what’s next? Is something getting in the way of connection or enjoyable sex? If you and your partner are frustrated and struggling to be on the same page, I want to help you find common ground. My couples want to see meaningful change in their relationships or marriages and they are ready to work. With that, I often describe my style as "caringly confrontational." I provide a validating and nonjudgmental space while calling partners in if something is getting in the way of connection.

I help change the world by creating more agents of love. Trauma and loss interfere with our ability to love. I direct the client's attention to areas of their lives where they are experiencing the most distress and offer a safe space for the client to identify, understand, and let go of the beliefs and patterns of behavior that no longer serve them. By healing trauma, we are free to give and receive love. At The Safe Space, we help each other understand our pasts so we can identify and change patterns of behavior no longer serving us. Our goal will be to make reflection a cherished hobby.

How can I find a therapist in New Jersey?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
