Based on my own experience and over 45 years of solid research concerning the therapeutic process (with the San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group) we all have the desire and means to overcome difficulties from the past, some beyond our awareness. I trained at the Langley-Porter Institute at UCSF where I studied five important schools of psychotherapy. Afterward, I elected to do a post-doctoral internship at Mount Zion where; the approach was case-specific. I was taught the importance of the "therapeutic alliance." In my view, the best way to establish an alliance is to become an ally. Your ally.
It is one thing to diagnose a person. It is quite another to understand with compassion. I will invest myself in you and treat you and your problems with respect and empathy.
