Therapeutic TTRPGs are an amazing way for
children
, adolescents, and even adults alike to develop social skills; boost confidence and self-esteem; practice critical thinking and problem-solving!.
Hi! I'm Anya, and I love helping people find themselves and the life that they want to live. I believe that everyone has the power within themselves to change, grow, and improve—if they just have a safe space to do so. That's why I work collaboratively with my clients (and their families) to create a trusting environment where we can nurture personal growth together. I graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 2018 with my bachelor’s in Family Studies with a minor in Psychology. I went on to receive my master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Bellevue University and currently have my PLMHP.

I work with
children
, teenagers, and adults with a variety of struggles including autism, ADHD, attachment, trauma, anxiety depression, PTSD, and more.
Sometimes we need help creating a safe space where we can be open and honest while we make sense of an event we want to resolve or our lives overall. Sometimes we need help to heal and someone to simply hear our story. A story filled with our experiences in the world and shaped by perceptions that are human-naturally distorted and flawed. People begin therapy for various reasons, yet wanting change is universal and desiring authenticity is the heart of this path. It is not about being happy, better, fixed. You are not broken. Healing reveals your authenticity and allows you to become... it feels like peace, bravery and truth.

For the past 10 years particularly, I have primarily focused on working with parents and
children
who suffer from unsafe, traumatic, and tragic situations.
In the famous words of Eric Matthews, (BMW) “Hey bro, life’s tough, get a helmet!” If only it were that easy, right!? This statement from my old sitcom obsession hit deep the first time I heard it, but has really engraved itself deeper the older, more experienced with life I have gotten. I’ve learned very quickly and/or the hard way that walking around with a helmet on wouldn’t make much of a difference at all and would probably just add to the stressors and hardships of life. Today’s world is different. Today’s world is hard. Today’s world can be scary. But most importantly, you don’t have to go through today’s world alone.

My practice primarily centers around individuals suffering from anxiety. This can be
children
struggling to manage changes in their lives, teens overwhelmed with the pressure they are experiencing, or adults struggling to balance responsibilities. I see a fair amount of
children
with ADHD diagnoses and have worked effectively in utilizing behavioral strategies to aid in symptomology, as well as balancing therapeutic skills with medication. I am trained in trauma and attachment and see
children
, teens, and adults struggling with these issues. As a trained play therapist, I employ aspects of play therapy with all clients.

I am trained in
Child
Centered Play Therapy, which is a research based, developmentally appropriate mental health intervention for kids.
Child
Centered Play Therapy uses play - which is the natural language of
children
- as a means to allow
children
to process big feelings, inner experiences, struggles and triumphs. My job is to facilitate this play and establish a safe, therapeutic relationship with the
child
. This relationship, paired with a safe, consistent play environment, has the potential to decrease problematic behaviors, increase self-esteem, increase positive coping skills and improve overall functioning.

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?
Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.
How long are sessions with child therapists?
Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.
How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?
The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?
A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
