"There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful than anything that bleeds" Laurell K. Hamilton. I believe that everyone has within themselves the ability to heal. I find it a privilege to walk with individual's on their personal journey to healing and living a full life. I have seen the therapeutic process open doors for individual healing. Being a part of the healing processes is a privilege where the opportunity for individuals to let go a little at a time presents, opening the door to hope and wholeness.

I help couples and families reconnect. Through a strengths-based framework, our work together creates an environment for each individual to feel heard, in sync, and stronger on their own path. I specialize in working with families with challenging children and acting out adolescents. Building a strong connection in your family is possible and I’d love to facilitate that journey. I am a Marriage and Family Therapist intern and complete my master’s degree October 2023. My internship is with Turner Therapy and Counseling, under the supervision of Katie Arkema. Reach out, I’d love to hear more and schedule time together.

Is your child or teen getting on your last nerve? Are they defiant, angry, sad or withdrawn? Changes in the family structure, through a breakup, divorce, or death of a family member, often create confusion and unexpressed feelings in kids. Financial worries, relocating, peer pressure, violence, and other stressors at school and in the neighborhood, can lead to behavioral problems. Your child might have stopped opening up to you because they didn't want to worry you, or fear they'd be in trouble. I understand. I specialize in helping school-age children, teens, and their parents through challenging times.

I have experience working with clients of all ages and walks of life. Each client is considered worthy, purposeful and is treated with compassion. I enjoy serving adolescent females and adults who are working through past traumas, current life stressors and who want to learn practical methods to manage anxiety.

Our minds are our most powerful asset! Without our minds what are we ? But our minds may also be are biggest barrier... Are you a child, adolescent , or adult struggling with anxiety or depression ? Do you have thoughts constantly running through your mind day in and day out that you can’t seem to get a grasp of or make stop? Did you make some choices that landed you in a tough, not so desirable position with drugs, alcohol, or the legal system in general? If so, Payton is the person that can help.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
