I have been a clinical psychologist for over 20 years, first as a staff psychologist at UNMC, and now in private practice in Papillion. I work with people 19 and older. The work I do is generally insight-oriented, meaning I want us to understand the factors underlying behaviors before attempting to change them. I am particularly interested in patterns, and how prior relational learning can repeat in the present. I try to make my office a place of safety where people can explore prior learning about themself and others in order to modify assumptions, expectations, and behavior. This type of work tends to lead to long-lasting change.

My approach to therapy is about connection and self-compassion. I use a direct approach in a relaxed environment without judgement. I believe that setting boundaries and using self-care can lead to a happier, more fulfilling life. I have a particular interest in working with people who have relationship issues, lack of connection to their emotions, or who are going through life transitions. I have extensive experience integrating somatic work with the science of attachment and nervous system regulation along with attunement.

Life can be overwhelming, making you feel helpless or create anguishing for you/your relationships. You may find your mind racing with "what if" and a sense of anxiety or foreboding. Other times, something so significant or shocking happens that it completely changes how you view the world. You may struggle to communicate or understand your emotions. And it may not stop there, disruptions can ripple out and affect your friends, partner, spouse, or family. They may want to help, want to understand, but like you may not know where to start. Finding serenity in yourself or your relationship can be a daunting task.

Accepting new clients for Online Therapy! I prefer clients who are active and engaged in their sessions. Clients who love to learn and are motivated to make positive changes in their lives. Clients that I work best with typically are ready to take notes, journal, keep track of the progress in therapy, and begin using the tools they are taught to make progress and changes in their lives. Together we will create a treatment plan that aligns with your needs and use it to guide therapy sessions and track our progress.

You are hard wired for connection. No matter the story you learned during your ‘how to human’ lessons-your brain literally needs deep, meaningful connections with other humans. And by being on this page, you and I both know that something you have learned in your journey up until this point is now in contrast with some vital aspect of your life and you are experiencing conflict. And this thing, this person, this job, whatever it is, it motivates you enough to think that perhaps there really could be a different narrative. And that hope, inspires you to wonder what I, Kristen Sanchez, could do to help.

Many of us did not grow up knowing that it was important - and okay - to take care of our mental health. We heard talking about going to the doctor when you are sick, but nothing about seeking counseling - therapy - when our thoughts, feelings, or behaviors aren't well. But seeing a therapist is just as important and normal as visiting your doctor. Our minds and bodies are one, endlessly affecting one another both positively and negatively. If we are unwell physically, then our mental health can suffer AND vise versa.

Reaching out for help or just someone to talk to can be a difficult first step. I am glad you are here and considering therapy. I am a client-centered, gender affirming, non-judgmental, compassionate and empathetic person. My goal is to help you be and feel your best. My focus is on the relationship between the client and the therapist to make change. My counseling and psychotherapy practice has grown from the roots of a 34- year career in public education. My experiences include 24 years in the classroom as a Spanish teacher (K-12), and a decade working as a high school Counselor. I have counseled diverse populations and cultures, and have extensive knowledge and practice in working with students who receive special education services. I have worked with families in crisis due to death, deployment and adverse circumstances. In addition, I have personal insight into the unique demands of military families as the mother of both an active duty soldier and a combat veteran.

How can I find a therapist in Sarpy County?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
