Every person deserves Dignity and Respect. We all sometimes need help. A different perspective and a reason for Hope can be important goals of counseling. We all approach life doing "The Best We Can". Thoughts, Feelings, and Behaviors all influence how we are doing. I have been in practice for 20+ years and works with individuals and families. I have experience working with the children/ teens, juvenile court system/probation, youth who sexually harm,
Marital
/family conflict, and behavioral/parenting issues. I am also a member of the Nebraska Academy of Collaborative Professionals and am trained in mediation.

As the parent of a child/teen that struggles with their wounded selves, you have tried everything. The exhaustive interventions that you have tried are going nowhere fast. Throwing in the towel is all that you have left. Your
marriage
is more daunting than it is invigorating and you keep hitting a wall with connecting to one another. Depression has you stuck in quicksand and the struggle is consuming you. Anxiety has its grip on you and it is controlling your life. You find yourself asking what more can you do? You feel all alone in your struggles and are having more moments of frustration than joy. Asking for help is hard.

I've studied with Ellyn Bader (The Couples Institute); Markman, Notarius & Stanley (Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program); Harville Hendrix (Getting the Love You Want); David Olson (PREPARE & ENRICH); John Gottman; Sherod & Phyllis Miller (Couple Communication); Michele Weiner-Davis (Divorce Busting); Michael & Harriet McManus (
Marriage
Savers).
Since 1990 I've helped couples create loving, lasting relationships. A premarital inventory (FOCCUS or PREPARE) pinpoints relationship strengths, and helps resolve conflicts. PREP communication and problem-solving skills help you find win-win solutions. PREP Couples have greater satisfaction and 1/2 the risk of divorce. If you feel like giving up, couple counseling identifies the real problems and how to resolve them. If kids are driving you crazy, "Love & Logic" keeps you calm & kind as kids develop respect, responsibility & self-esteem. Individual counseling helps overcome anger, depression, fears, stress; and develop assertiveness, self-esteem, social comfort, willpower.

I am a trained
marriage
and family therapist and have pursued additional training in Emotionally Focused therapy.
We all have a unique story. One that has highs and lows, things that bring us joy, and things that have caused challenges, grief, and heartache. A desire for a life of abundance is written on our hearts. But sometimes our stories include hurdles and barriers that get in the way and keep us from the peace we long for. We often try numerous remedies or try to overcome these barriers on our own. But we aren’t meant to walk that road alone. It is my job as a therapist to create a space of safety, trust, and respect, so that you can explore, unpack, and make meaning of your experiences, and create the change that you want for your life.

Marriage Counseling Therapists
How does marriage counseling work?
Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.
How long does marriage counseling typically last?
Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.
Is marriage counseling effective?
Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.
Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?
Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
