There are challenges in everyone’s life that can seem daunting. At such times, we need and deserve an understanding, compassionate, knowledgeable guide to assist us in identifying the thoughts and feelings associated with our current difficulties. Factors like background, ethnicity, race, and family dynamics are significant contributing elements that can be essential to clarifying and understanding the client’s situation. The goal for each client is to develop an achievable course of action that leads to effectively managing and reducing their distress.

It is difficult, if not impossible to go through life and not experience some type of painful life experience. Whether we have had painful experiences since childhood or a single episode, the long-lasting effects, if gone untreated, can be detrimental. These unresolved painful experiences effect our lives in so many ways that it can start to influence our thinking, decisions, and overall way of living. It becomes difficult to have healthy relationships, hold jobs, and take care of ourselves. It is important to find relief and resolution from these experiences so you can start to live the life you deserve.

In therapy I implement effective psychotherapy methods to instill self-understanding among patients and encourage them to adopt new attitudes and feelings towards life situations. It is essential to keep in mind that therapy is not a magic pill or a quick fix: therapy is a healing process that necessitates participation and investment from the patient and caretaker alike. But in the end, making small changes to self-defeating behavior and coping with feelings of sadness, fear, and pain can bring life-altering results.

I want to create a safe and supportive atmosphere where people can discuss their lives freely without fear of judgement. While the specific goals of therapy are always decided by the client, my overarching goals with each person is that they will come to understand their worth as an individual, and will find freedom to fully engage with life. I believe in not only addressing issues that hold people back, but also in exploring their unique strengths and interests.

“Where do you want to go today?” and “What should we talk about today?” are two questions I regularly ask my clients at the start of a session. Although straightforward and basic, I believe that those questions really get to the crux of what counseling and therapy are all about. I want you to leave your session feeling like you have been heard and that you have a plan in place to move you towards your goals. Therapy can be difficult at times but know that you will have a therapist who is honest with you, supportive, and sincere.

“A step may be the beginning of a great journey” In life the first step is always the most difficult for people, the same can be said about therapy. Introducing oneself to someone they just met, trusting a stranger with their thoughts and feelings can be a truly intimidating experience. The purpose of therapy is to provide a safe space for a person to take the first step on the journey of healing and the personal growth that follows. Therapy is fluidic and follows an integrative, and adaptable path determined by the client’s goals.

Our mental health is no less vital than our physical health, but one area many of us choose to ignore. Often, we become out of balance with our emotions, career and relationships. We may lose a sense of control and only hope to numb the pain. Although life can feel complicated, what isn't complicated is our need to feel loved, respected and that we matter. Caring for yourself is a good place to start.

It is our perception that creates our reality. Therapy allows individuals the unique opportunity to explore their perceptions within daily life. I believe connecting the mind to positive thinking, understanding emotions, and gaining self-awareness assists youth in developing healthy coping strategies. I focus the majority of my practice in offering a warm, comfortable environment for youth and adolescents to achieve these three attributes.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
