I enjoy working with adults who are dealing with challenges to their physical and emotional health including chronic pain / illness , aging-related concerns and other life transitions, as well as general mental health.
As a seasoned therapist, I believe that people are doing the best they can to manage life's challenges with the resources and skills they have available. When things are out of balance, therapy can help on both sides of the equation - reducing challenges and stressors, as well as improving coping skills and strategies to manage them more effectively. I use a variety of mindfullness based therapies in my practice that all offer clients the opportunity to learn skills to better manage whatever symptoms or problems bring them to therapy.

If your goal is to learn who you are and how to live your authentic self, you have arrived at the right place. I utilize Integrative therapy, which makes room for inclusivity and flexibility at meeting client differences. This includes Cognitive Behavioral, DBT, Family Systems, Gestalt, etc. Diversity in people demands diversity in approaches!

I have the training to help women and couples process their most intimate challenges. Sexuality is a huge part of person's life and can have so much power over a person or relationship. I want to help women and couples find sexual happiness. I take a un-biased, honest, collaborative and open approach to treatment. I want individuals to find the best sexual self they can be. At this time my practice and research is focused on couples and women. I do not treat men individually at this time.

“Live life to the fullest.” “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” “When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on.” These are great, but life is more complex than cliché quotes. As your counselor, it is my pleasure to partner with you to find real joy in life again. True freedom does take work and can feel terrible as you work through the pain , but is it worth it? 100%! You are worthy of happiness, freedom, and wholeness, even if you don’t currently feel it.

What does it mean to "take care of your mental health?" It's easier to tell when you aren't taking care of it: chronic stress, exhaustion, worry, and panic are all signs your mental health is suffering. If untreated, you could start having nightmares, poor health, trouble in your relationships, and difficulty staying on top of work or school. There are many things that can lead to mental health struggles, like a too-busy schedule, a chronic illness or someone else's troubles, a major life transition, or a death of someone close to you. Or, it could seem to come out of the blue, caused by nothing at all.

At times you may feel a sense of identity loss or may be dealing with symptoms of mental illness .
Seeking guidance for your life can be difficult, I understand how hard it can be to reach out for help. I believe that self-improvement and a life of joy and hope are possible for all people, no matter their struggles. I provide psychotherapy to help my clients identify problem areas in their lives that they want to overcome, set small goals to achieve their desired outcome, and help them make connections between how events in their past are driving their emotions, thoughts, and decisions today.

There is often a crossroads at the point of pain , of hope and hopelessness.
I specialize in treatment for clients recovering from significant, acquired physical injury (e.g., traumatic brain injury, limb loss, orthopedic injury). Difficulties following such life-changing events can include depression, anxiety, adjustment disorder, and PTSD among others. Most everyone wants to re-engage in a meaningful life post-injury, but sometimes even the possibility feels distant. Simply existing with significant pain seems hard enough. However, I feel confident there is always a next step toward our goals, no matter the situation, and I enjoy coming to know and support clients who are courageously taking the next step.

I have experience working in a variety of settings with adolescents, adults, couples and families as well as those struggling with serious mental illness .
I believe in the power of human connection to get us through life’s challenges. Reaching out for help in our most vulnerable moments can be difficult and overwhelming. Our self-talk can be so convincing that we should figure things out on our own or that our problems aren’t as bad as they could be, that we remain stuck. I will meet you where you are in your challenge, providing a safe and calming environment to explore avenues to find hope and healing. My work takes a holistic approach integrating the mind, body and spirit connection to help you create a strong foundation to meet those challenges.

"Life is not the way it's supposed to be. It's the way it is. The way you deal with it is what makes the difference." ~ Virginia Satir. The journey of life is filled with so many "bumps in the road" - illness , loss, family adjustments, physical changes. It can leave you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, depressed and out of balance, making it increasingly difficult to function in daily life. It's important to take the time to recognize and heal the emotional change that accompanies life's unexpected twists and turns. I look forward to walking this path with you...it is an honor.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
