Feeling heard and validated is important for self discovery and growth. Reaching out for help can be very difficult at first. We all know that taking care of ourselves physically is important and now we know it is as important to take care of ourselves mentally and emotionally. Going to therapy is like going to the doctor for a cold or to the gym to gain some physical strength. The challenges you face deserve the very best care; together we can develop a strategy for better life satisfaction.

Hi there! I’m Avien, a drug and alcohol counselor. I offer individual sessions and IOP/Education services in-person, and virtually in Lincoln, Omaha, Grand Island, and all throughout Nebraska. I know it can feel overwhelming to be stuck in the cycle of addiction—using drugs or alcohol to numb pain, escape trauma, or just get through the day. You might feel lost, alone, or unsure of where to start, but you don’t have to do this by yourself.

My ideal client is a teen or adult navigating mental health and substance use concerns at the same time, often with a history of trauma. They may feel overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure how their past affects the present. They want relief, stability, and healthier coping, and they want to understand themselves better so they can move forward with confidence and purpose.

I am most passionate about helping my clients recover and connect to their authentic self, helping them use that improved connection to heal and live more fully. Clients often need to find relief from fear, sadness, addiction, conflict, lostness. But lasting relief usually requires finding their true selves more fully. This may involve letting go of the anesthesia of addictions, overthinking and emotional disconnection, as well as shame and self-misunderstanding. Not everyone is ready or willing to do the deeper work that this requires, and that is ok. But as a therapist I am a better fit for those that are willing to try.

Human beings are highly adaptable, but sometimes the ways in which we cope are maladaptive or counter productive. Oftentimes when we encounter adversity our natural instinct is to tough it out and hope things change. Sometimes that can lead to feeling stuck, helpless, or overwhelmed when things don't change. Therapy can help get you unstuck and back to living the life you deserve. My main areas of focus include complex trauma, PTSD, dissociative disorders, and attachment issues. I am Level 1 trained in IFS and trained in EMDR.

111 Free, Inc embraces the philosophy that many individuals find that they have slipped into a “dark hole” of unhealthy thoughts/emotions/behaviors. They are in need of assistance with changing for the better and regaining control of their “whole life.” In other words, people are living in a dark basement of life when they could be living on the rooftop of life where there is light and positivity. Hence, they need to literally use "steps" to get from the basement to the rooftop in which 111 Free, Inc will provide a guide for attaining this goal. That way, people are able to live their "best life" in peace!

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
