***I value providing space and time for current clients. Because of this value, I am not able to take on new clients at this time.*** Hello! I am Stephanie and my passion is working with women and girls who have experienced trauma. Getting through the day can be a struggle after trauma occurs. It can feel like your personality completely changes. Like you are unseen, unheard, and a burden. You have tried navigating these feelings on your own, but need more support. Maybe this is occurring to your child or teenager and you want to ensure they are getting the right help at the right time.

Sometimes childhood is interrupted by crisis—feelings and situations too big for children, teens and families to deal with on their own. Often children (especially teens) express their sadness, fear and anger through their behaviors and attitude. This "acting out" is especially challenging to caregivers. Child Saving Institute (CSI) offers comprehensive mental health services including pediatric, adolescent and family therapy alongside psychiatric evaluations and medication management services to children, teens and young adults.

Does it seem like your child or teen is speaking a different language at times? As parents, it can be difficult understanding his or her behavior and/or angst. Children from infancy through adolescence can seem unmanageable at times causing parents to feel overwhelmed and powerless. Why continue struggling? If your child is having a difficult time at home, in school, or with friends, I can empathetically provide kids with an engaging, effective way to process feelings, learn new skills, and improve behaviors through utilization of a wrap-a-round approach.

Is your child or teen getting on your last nerve? Are they defiant, angry, sad or withdrawn? Changes in the family structure, through a breakup, divorce, or death of a family member, often create confusion and unexpressed feelings in kids. Financial worries, relocating, peer pressure, violence, and other stressors at school and in the neighborhood, can lead to behavioral problems. Your child might have stopped opening up to you because they didn't want to worry you, or fear they'd be in trouble. I understand. I specialize in helping school-age children, teens, and their parents through challenging times.

As the parent of a child/ teen that struggles with their wounded selves, you have tried everything. The exhaustive interventions that you have tried are going nowhere fast. Throwing in the towel is all that you have left. Your marriage is more daunting than it is invigorating and you keep hitting a wall with connecting to one another. Depression has you stuck in quicksand and the struggle is consuming you. Anxiety has its grip on you and it is controlling your life. You find yourself asking what more can you do? You feel all alone in your struggles and are having more moments of frustration than joy. Asking for help is hard.

Is your preschooler running your household? Has your teenager been pushing you to the edge? There are many different theories on how to manage unwanted behaviors in children, and help your struggling teen . Some of these theories can leave parents with more questions than answers. You might ask yourself, "Does my child need more attention, or am I giving too much? Are my expectations of my teenager too high, or too low? If I ask for help, does that make me a good parent, or an incompetent one?" I specialize in working with children, adolescents, and their families, and I can help you find answers.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
