Life can be a wonderful adventure, but it can also offer some bumps along the way. Starting or continuing any type of healing journey can feel overwhelming. It's so important you can work on this journey feeling heard, not judged, and supported along the way. Through the therapeutic relationship, clients I work with have a better ability to utilize compassion for self and others. In addition, we work together to challenge the thoughts, patterns, and actions that are preventing you from moving forward.

I understand that making the decision to come to therapy is not always easy. I strive to provide a therapeutic environment that emphasizes safety, compassion, collaboration, and support. My hope is to walk alongside you as you embark on your therapeutic journey, wherever it might take you, and provide you with guidance, encouragement, and even a different perspective! The idea that sustainable happiness is an unattainable goal, is a tricky one. It's that thing we say to ourselves: "if I just ____ then I will be happy ...or if they just ____ then I will be happy." I prefer the idea of moving toward being more content. Isn't content what we feel when we are comfortable, calm, validated and without anxious or depressive thoughts that mess with our days? Often, if not almost always, we have traumas (big or small) and mean/sad/negative inner voices and thoughts that, if we process them, we can get to our contentedness.

Pain is a part of life, but suffering doesn't have to be. Difficult or painful experiences can contribute to suffering in many forms, including depression, anxiety, lack of self-compassion, ineffective behaviors, and relationship struggles. I believe that through pain, we have the opportunity to nurture the strength and wisdom that each individual already holds.

I believe mental health is as important as physical health. It is my view that mental health can best be described as a spectrum - we are either in balance or out of balance. Currently the society we live in can make difficult for us to remain in balance, and we may find ourselves locked into thought or behavior patterns which prevent us from achieving the life we want. Therapy can help to restore our mental health equilibrium. My hope for my clients is that together we can identify and eliminate the disconnect between thoughts and behaviors so they can live a life filled with meaning.

I believe that the client should determine the goals for therapy, based on their particular concerns. Each client identifies how they would determine whether counseling was successful at the beginning of treatment. These become the therapeutic goals for our sessions. We typically meet weekly at the beginning of therapy and less frequently as therapy continues. Our sessions are 50 minutes long and we contract with most of the major insurance providers in the Lincoln, Nebraska area. We don't prescribe medications in our office and are happy to collaborate with medical providers and others (with a release of information).

I know that reaching out to a therapist can be overwhelming and downright terrifying. There is absolutely no judgement as you take this first step to improving your overall well-being. Sometimes, life can cause overwhelming feelings of stress, irritability, overthinking, hopelessness, and difficulty doing the things you once enjoyed. Using a strength-based, person-centered approach, my hope is to provide you with a space to be yourself to work through the issues that are causing you distress.

I have worked in the health care field for twenty years serving those adjusting to life's transitions. I have gained much insight into helping individuals find ways to not only cope but to experience joy again. I hope to bring increased self-awareness and encourage client's to find new paths that bring greater peace to whatever stress is contributing to anxiety, depression and other adjustment issues.

I strive to understand people in all of their complexity. My goal in therapy is to see through a client’s lens as much as possible, and then work with them to find positive changes they can make in their lives. Drawing heavily from the evidence-based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy model (ACT), I help clients to be more mindful of the interface between their internal and external experiences. When we become more aware of the patterns in our thoughts, emotions, and actions, we can be intentional about releasing what is not helpful to us.

I am trained in Child Centered Play Therapy, which is a research based, developmentally appropriate mental health intervention for kids. Child Centered Play Therapy uses play - which is the natural language of children - as a means to allow children to process big feelings, inner experiences, struggles and triumphs. My job is to facilitate this play and establish a safe, therapeutic relationship with the child. This relationship, paired with a safe, consistent play environment, has the potential to decrease problematic behaviors, increase self-esteem, increase positive coping skills and improve overall functioning.
