Life can get difficult, and it takes courage to move forward. If you are struggling with life's challenges, it might be time to see a licensed counselor. As a natural listener, interested in your stories, your challenges, and your goals, I'm here to nurture your journey toward healing and personal growth. In a safe, caring environment, I instill self-understanding and encourage clients to adopt new attitudes and feelings toward life situations by practicing logical thinking, mindfulness, relaxation techniques, and goal setting/follow through.

I care about people and I want to help. Helen Keller is quoted as saying, "The only way out is through" and I believe you don't have to do it alone. I view therapy as a collaborative process in which we work together in a safe, nonjudgmental, and supportive environment. We partner to increase awareness of your thoughts and feelings, identify your values and goals, and practice actions to help keep you moving forward. Together we can identify and acquire effective skills to get your life to how you want it to be. You can do this. You have more ability than you may realize.

I would describe my approach as insight-oriented and holistic. I want to help you learn more about who you are and how your past has affected you, so that you can identify the patterns that are helpful in the present and those that are no longer working. I have over 10 years of experience working with complex trauma, domestic violence, sexual assault, and dissociative disorders, as well as experience with anxiety, depression, and life transitions. I also have specialized training in art therapy that some clients really find helpful, especially those that don't love the typical talk therapy approach.

We were made for relationships…like good relationships — with God, one another and ourselves. But that’s easier said than done, right? We get hurt. Or we do some of the hurting. We feel fractured, broken and bent. So what would it look like to reconnect and experience life the way we were meant to: whole, vulnerable, loved and well, connected? I want to help you get there. Let's find a way to reconnect.

I believe that the client should determine the goals for therapy, based on their particular concerns. Each client identifies how they would determine whether counseling was successful at the beginning of treatment. These become the therapeutic goals for our sessions. We typically meet weekly at the beginning of therapy and less frequently as therapy continues. Our sessions are 50 minutes long and we contract with most of the major insurance providers in the Lincoln, Nebraska area. We don't prescribe medications in our office and are happy to collaborate with medical providers and others (with a release of information).

I have been working with adolescents, adults and families since the mid 1980's. Substance abuse, depression, anxiety, LGBT and family issues are the areas that I have the most experience in. I believe folks come to therapy because some aspects of their lives are not working...we will explore these issues and move to get you where you want and need to be. I have many years of various types of training, but the most important is to get people back to being comfortable, happy and productive in their own world. Compassion and humor are extremely important values to find in each of our lives!!

I believe the best way to help people is to encourage and teach them how to help themselves. Each of us has gifts and strengths. Sometimes we need help uncovering or realizing how our strengths can lead us to solutions. I strive to provide a nonjudgmental, safe, confidential, and nurturing environment where clients can talk about tough stuff. Using an eclectic, integrative therapy approach, I create treatment plans to meet each client’s individual needs. Additionally, I offer a welcoming place for clients to talk about their faith and religious or spiritual beliefs and values.

This quote encompasses my approach to trauma and change: “Trauma creates change you don’t choose. Healing is about creating the change that you DO choose.” In my work with clients I seek to navigate through change, healing, and trauma, find and seek deeper meaning and understandings of our own selves within our existence and displays of resilience. In creating what we CHOOSE, whether it be CHANGE through our thought processes, relationships, decisions, or behavior the goals can seek to embrace the differences, challenges, and the unexpected that life throws at us.

I believe that therapy can help everyone understand themselves better and how they interact with the world. I partner with my clients to provide a place where we can figure out a way forward, knowing that everyone's path to healing is unique. I hold a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Doane University, and additional graduate credits from Northern Seminary, as I'm interested in the intersection of spiritual and clinical care.

I strive to understand people in all of their complexity. My goal in therapy is to see through a client’s lens as much as possible, and then work with them to find positive changes they can make in their lives. Drawing heavily from the evidence-based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy model (ACT), I help clients to be more mindful of the interface between their internal and external experiences. When we become more aware of the patterns in our thoughts, emotions, and actions, we can be intentional about releasing what is not helpful to us.

It can be difficult to take those first steps to start counseling services, and I believe that finding someone who is a good fit for you is such an important part of the therapeutic process. My first priority is always the working relationship that I have with my clients, and my style is very warm and collaborative in nature. My hope for your therapy process is to work together to identify goals, engage in self-exploration, and make the changes that you want to see in your life. I feel that it is my job to provide a safe environment for you to grow and learn more about yourself, and to build trust to begin making those changes!

We were not made to experience life alone. I firmly believe that feeling heard and supported facilitates an environment of growth. My strengths and personal experiences with counseling ignited a passion to support others as they move forward in their journey. I emphasize an environment in which individuals feel safe to step into self-exploration and empowered to utilize their personal wisdom as they take steps toward their best self. My biggest hope for clients is that they will realize they are worthy of unconditional positive regard and the work it takes to move toward their best self.
