I work with individuals who are experiencing depression,
anxiety
and anger management, and enjoy serving populations ranging from adolescents to adults.
I believe mental health is as important as physical health. It is my view that mental health can best be described as a spectrum - we are either in balance or out of balance. Currently the society we live in can make difficult for us to remain in balance, and we may find ourselves locked into thought or behavior patterns which prevent us from achieving the life we want. Therapy can help to restore our mental health equilibrium. My hope for my clients is that together we can identify and eliminate the disconnect between thoughts and behaviors so they can live a life filled with meaning.

Counseling provides a safe place to resolve many of the symptoms of emotional and physical stress related to addiction, depression,
anxiety
or trauma. Through relationship counseling, people learn how to reconnect after conflict and discover the power of truly listening to others in conversation.
Helping people learn how to respond rather than react in close and intimate relationships, resolving conflict through healthy communication.

Because every kind of emotional suffering deserves relief... 1) I treat trauma survivors with PTSD and depression; 2) I help couples or individuals who are struggling in partner relationships; and 3) I advise adults who are frustrated in their parenting adventures. Also, if you are surviving dissociative symptoms, are recovering from secret habits, are suffering with
anxiety
or bipolar disorder, hear voices, have a history of several psychiatric diagnoses, or haven't responded well to psychotropic medications, come talk to me. (**If you prefer a female clinician, I can connect you with a trusted, experienced female therapist.**)

I have experience and/or training working with individuals experiencing
anxiety
, depression, trauma, difficulty coping, or feelings of being stuck.
I understand that mental health needs come from a wide variety of life experiences. I aim to offer a safe space where individuals can explore issues in their life through an Existential lens to help them find clarification and awareness. I work with clients to identify behaviors that they have learned as a way to adapt to their life experiences and how those behaviors impact the type of life that they desire to have. I aim to help clients rebuild a sense of hope within themselves that a different experience of life is possible.

I have been working with adolescents, adults and families since the mid 1980's. Substance abuse, depression,
anxiety
, LGBT and family issues are the areas that I have the most experience in. I believe folks come to therapy because some aspects of their lives are not working...we will explore these issues and move to get you where you want and need to be. I have many years of various types of training, but the most important is to get people back to being comfortable, happy and productive in their own world. Compassion and humor are extremely important values to find in each of our lives!!

Sometimes we encounter a point in life that feels overwhelming, or sometimes things are manageable but a lot to bear, and there comes a time when you need a professional to guide you through it. That's where I come in! I believe that clients are the experts of their life, meaning they take me on their journey, and I am simply there as a guide to help navigate what can be a windy path. Therapy is vulnerable, therefore I strive to create a safe environment by being my authentic self, meeting clients with kindness and grace and bringing in light humor, and I hope that you will feel comfortable to authentically be yourself, too.

those with foster care/juvenile justice experience) are my passion, I have worked with eating disorders/overeating, trauma,
anxiety
, parenting/co-parenting, couples, and life transitions.
You are not broken. No one is. Still it can feel that way sometimes. Chances are, you're actually a capable, talented, and lovable person dealing with a crappy situation (or bunch of situations) or life just isn't what you want it to be. I want to understand how you see yourself, explore what isn't working, and define what success means for you (not what others' or society has told you). We will explore the ways you've overcome hard things before and test out new tools, until we find what works specifically for you. My most important job is to reflect your strengths and beauty back to you and help you put these skills to work.

I work primarily with adults with a wide range of presenting problems such as depression,
anxiety
, trauma, OCD, bipolar, etc. My early training and early career jobs were in agencies serving primarily children and adolescents. I have shifted to working primarily with adults, but continue to keep my hand in a bit of therapy with adolescents. My background in child/adolescent therapy has been useful in working with adults struggling with their children, teens, and adult children. I also enjoy working with couples struggling with the trials and complexities of being in a marriage.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
