When you are feeling overwhelmed by life, a therapist can help you. You know that you want to feel better - and be better for yourself and others - but when you have been doing the things that have always worked in the past and find they are not working now, it may be time to enlist the support of a therapist.  I love to work with people who feel overwhelmed, stuck, sad, anxious, indecisive, or have any other painful emotion. Instead of feeling stuck, I want to help you feel empowered to move forward and help manage those painful feelings.

She enjoys working with clients struggling with treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, self-harm, and PTSD.
Nature's Way Holistic Counseling offers clinical mental health counseling with the addition of a health and wellness framework that connects the body, mind, and spirit. We believe in the term "holistic" counseling because our minds are not independent of all other aspects of life, but is dependent upon the complex, interconnected factors of life, including the food we eat, the environment in which we live, and the content we consume. Although some counseling services address these topics on some level, there is a gap in the field of practitioners offering such a comprehensive evaluation.

I incorporate approaches including DBT, CBT, harm reduction, motivational interviewing, mindfulness-based stress reduction, psychoeducation, and crisis intervention. My approach to counseling is to offer individuals a space to be themselves without judgment or shame, but instead with curiosity and compassion.

I am an intensively trained Behavior Tech Dialectical Behavior Therapist with specialized training treating self-harm and suicidal ideation.
We all imagine a life worth living. We hope to get up each and every day with a clear sense of purpose and self-worth. And sometimes, life becomes overwhelming. The day to day tasks of living may feel insurmountable, and we may even consider giving up or running away from it all. We are pulled in so many directions and feel out of the driver’s seat in our own lives. Relationships we once valued seem meaningless and activities that used to bring us joy no longer do. We need to be reminded of who we are and our value to this world. We all want to be heard, understood and validated.

I treat suicidal thinking, self-harming behaviors, and trauma in my practice.
First we work together to manage coping, then we go deeper when it's safe to. We'll use DBT to help you decrease dangerous or unhelpful behaviors (anything from self-harm to sabotaging relationships), then we move towards processing trauma with EMDR if that is appropriate. I am DBT intensively trained and fully EMDR trained with continuing ed in parts work.

Whether you struggle with a personality disorder, suicidal ideation/urges to self harm, or experience the anxiety that is perfectionism and impostor syndrome.
Through DBT Interventions, we will identify and explore our triggers which lead to maladaptive coping/behavioral patterns. We can then begin to address these triggers by challenging, reframing, and restructuring them. In doing so, we are able to allow our behavioral responses to align with the person we want to become and obtain a life that is worth living.

Have you experienced thoughts of suicide?
It is my belief that one of the most courageous decisions a person can make along their journey through life, is to allow themselves to be vulnerable enough to ask for help from time to time. This is especially true when they find themselves stuck in a situation that leaves them feeling defeated or in some cases as, “less than”.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
