I go by Ellis, and I am autistic, disabled, queer, and agender. <3 I believe you are the expert of your own experience, possessing inherent worth and galactic inner landscapes that deserve to be seen and celebrated. I enjoy working with clients who want to carve a fulfilling, value-led path outside of neuro-normativity and all systems of oppression. We may be a good fit if you are someone who feels at great depths and grapples with existential grief. Perhaps you're creative, autistic, AuDHD, 2e/3e, an OCDer, chronically ill, or LGBTQIA+ (ace/aro/trans/nb/enm)? Perhaps you are a pretty neat human? I'm honored to be here with you. :)

You are not too much, too weird, or too different- you just haven’t found the right therapist yet! I have heard some version of this story so many times from clients: they were told their needs were too complex, their previous therapists seemed to struggle to connect with them, and they left sessions feeling more pathologized than understood. I’ve lived it myself. As an AuDHD person with chronic illness, I know what it’s like to move through the world in a body and brain that doesn’t always cooperate with what’s expected of you.

Do you feel suffocated by others’ expectations, afraid or unsure of how to ask for help, overwhelmed with commitments, unable to take a break, like you’re just trying to survive the day? Maybe you’re fed up with struggling at school/work and with getting so easily overwhelmed. You might not even remember a time when things didn’t feel this way. One thing is for sure though. You’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to make sense of what’s happening to you and take back control. Most of all, you’re ready to regain balance in your life so you can finally breathe easy again.

Heyo! I’m Ally (they/them) You're in the right place if your brain feels like it's running 99 tabs at once. One is screaming anxiety, another is replaying a conversation from three years ago, and a few are busy worrying about everyone else. You've spent so long in survival mode that being present in your own body feels foreign. Maybe you're LGBTQIA+ and tired of explaining or defending who you are, even in spaces that are supposed to be safe. Maybe you're navigating trauma, dissociation, people-pleasing, or a gender journey, and talking about it hasn't been enough. You just want to feel like yourself and reconnect with who you are.

Is it easier to talk about your complex thoughts and beliefs than your feelings? Maybe you’ve been told you “overthink” or “intellectualize.” Do you often understand why and how you are struggling with something but it doesn’t help you move through it? Have you had therapists tell you “you have so much self-awareness?” Maybe you've been described as “insightful.” Maybe you have always managed to be “successful” despite no one recognizing the struggle you know is there. There is no magical therapy technique here; however I have a deep understanding of the nuances that show up for those who resonated with what I said above.

Transgender Therapists
As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?
A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?
Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?
An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?
Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
