While I have worked with a large variety of patients and presenting problems, I specialize in working with trauma, depression, anxiety, sexuality,
spirituality
, creativity, and relationships.
What do I do for a living? I meet with people and talk about the most intimate aspect of their lives. It's not a bad job and I love the work I get to do. While I often draw from a variety of psychological techniques, I am firmly rooted in psychodynamic/psychoanalytic theory which is a really fancy way of saying I believe authentic relationships bring about sincere change in people. As such, I work hard to create a trusting, comfortable space to help clients explore their goals and experience sincere growth.

For 20 years, I have worked with individuals, couples, and families by combining the behavioral sciences with
spirituality
to work towards a better sense of well-being for people.
Life can be challenging. And right now, in some ways, it seems even harder. Having trouble figuring out where to go next? Start here. Many people hesitate to get started with counseling because taking that first step can be hard. Yet, being stuck in life or continuing in a dysfunctional situation is much harder. Today is a good day to start in a different direction with a more hopeful future.

My special interests include family counseling, relationship concerns, parenting concerns, women's issues, developmental transitions, ADHD, depression, anxiety,
spirituality
, career issues, communication, and self-esteem difficulties.
My theory of counseling is that people have specific behaviors they would like to change, which are caused by our irrational, self-defeating beliefs learned from earlier life experiences. My goal will be to assist with change of the irrational and self-defeating beliefs to change undesired behaviors and circumstances. Counseling is a personal exploration that leads to major changes in your life perspectives and decisions. These changes may affect significant relationships and understanding of yourself. Some of these life changes could be temporarily distressing. Together we will work to achieve the best possible results for you.

My
Spirituality
, and Community is a key role that offers "peace" and support! I can't; We can!.
I have been working in the field for 25+ years in various capacities from IDD/Autism, clinics, in and out patient, LGBTQ, Correctional Facility Drug Program, men and adolescent re-entry, brushing with some gang activity. Whats was common was: NO PLAN; there should to be a plan. People have to be honest with themself. When being assessed be honest; fabricating the truth; the cycle continues; being honest; the healing begins. It's not easy, but necessary. A plan built on truth and commitment, support. One of my clients once told me "You know your firm; but your fair." I've held that for 25+ years.

Life has a way of catching up to us when we least expect it. Life transition occurs regardless of what is happening in your life. When transitions occur, you may experience one or more changes in your relationships, family, health, home, career, or
spirituality
. As a result of life transition, adjusting to life can become difficult and unmanageable to navigate alone. When life changes become difficult to manage, speaking to a therapist can significantly affect your outlook on life.

I am open to working with all spiritual orientations or keeping
spirituality

I believe that one of the most successful outcomes to treatment depends on the therapeutic relationship. This involves the client feeling safe and trusting of the therapist while he/she explores emotional vulnerabilities and painful thought processes. My hope is that you will experience me as someone who actively listens to you and works with you to develop effective problem-solving strategies.

Robert L Cooke
Pastoral Counselor, DMin, NCFBPPC
My patients seek healing from inner pain. Their issues often include grief, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, relationship issues, life transitions, burnout, and financial stress. Exploring their concerns in a safe space, we address who they are, what they care about, and how they can cope more effectively. We also discuss how personality preferences influence their behaviors and conflict styles. Working with their family stories, we find traits and relationship patterns that affect their lives and find strategies to manage them. Discussions about faith,
spirituality
, and ethics are welcomed and invited.

Spirituality Therapists
What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?
Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.
What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?
There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.
Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?
Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.
How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?
Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
