Working with a therapist should feel safe, and that has remained one of my top priorities over my 10+ years of providing therapy. Some of my clients have had therapists before, some are changing therapists, and others are brand new to therapy. Many of my clients are working through previous trauma (childhood and adulthood), have experienced complicated loss, and many belong to a marginalized community. Some of my clients benefit from long-term therapy, while others engage in brief therapy to help get back on track to a better quality of life. Wherever you are in this process, I welcome you!

I specialize in clients with a history of childhood sexual abuse.
Every day I have the privilege of working with the bravest folks on the planet & none of you know it when you first walk in the door. You often feel defeated, overwhelmed & ashamed that you aren't able to "get over" your sexual, physical or emotional trauma. It's also common for you to have a nagging, chronic sense that something is just not right, an unhappiness; feeling unloved or unlovable, disconnected from friends and family, having lost a sense of purpose or direction. Without knowing that these symptoms may be telling us that a past trauma--long ago

Accepting New Clients: Symptoms often emerge as adaptive mechanisms and solutions to address events and emotions. This is particularly applicable to survivors of trauma, encompassing physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, as well as other experiences involving loss and grief. These symptoms can shift from being solutions to becoming the very problems clients aim to address in therapy in pursuit of relief. In addition to imparting new coping strategies designed to alleviate these symptoms, when applicable, clients are also supported in addressing the underlying issues that gave rise to the development of these symptoms. a

Understanding the personal journey of healing from childhood sexual abuse can be deeply challenging.
Over the past 30 years, I have worked with about 400 men who were sexually abused during childhood. These men often come to me feeling hopeless and lost. With my experience and expertise, I am generally able to instill a sense of hope and optimism quite quickly. While therapy to address the long-term effects of childhood sexual abuse is certainly a long and difficult process, the men with whom I work usually see dramatic improvement across virtually every area of their lives. It is enormously gratifying to see these men move from despair to optimism, success and joy.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
