In my part time private practice I offer counseling/therapy to adults, children, adolescents, and parents. My areas of special interest include anxiety, depression, and parent education. I enjoy working with adults who are dealing with life challenges, loss, and seeking personal growth. When seeing children or adolescents, I typically use a child centered approach with the opportunity for play therapy. I also have experience with CBT, EFT, and mindfulness. These techniques are helpful in treating individuals who are experiencing anxiety, regulation of attention and impulse control, and trauma.

I enjoy parent training and reinforcing the valuable but challenging opportunity of parents to rear well the children entrusted to them.
I believe therapy takes much courage, and I continue to be humbled as each person shares their life and story with me in counseling. I consider it an honor and seek to value what is entrusted to me. I am considered a generalist with a wide range of clinical expertise from individual, child, and couples therapy to effective parenting to geriatric issues plus the forensic evaluation of child abuse and related court testimony. I implement a relational, holistic approach to treatment. Several modalities I utilize to reach clients’ goals are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma Focused-CBT, Solution-Focused Therapy, & Couples work.

This includes launching from school, parenting at various stages, and marital separation.
Relationships require work. You may be working hard, but if that work is destructive -- such as excessive conflict, worry, negativity, blaming or guilt, these actions and thoughts are breaking down, not building, healthy relationships. I concentrate on developing and sustaining positive motivation and behavior. In therapy with me, couples and individuals can expect thoughtful, knowledgeable support and direct guidance to make your work constructive. I will lend strength when needed, and, will just as quickly 'call you' on counterproductive behavior. This is a dynamic process.

In addition to my work with adults, adolescents, and college students, I also offer parent guidance sessions, where parents and I work together to understand their child's emotional and behavioral struggles, and strategize on what can be done at home to support healthy social and emotional development.
The decision to seek psychotherapy can be one of the most courageous and life-changing things you can do. If you are in emotional pain, struggle with troubling relationship patterns, or are experiencing a difficult life transition, I would like to help. I strive to provide a nurturing, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where we work together to understand the underlying roots of painful patterns and problematic behaviors that may be keeping you feeling stuck and frustrated. It is through this process of self-examination and increased understanding that growth, healing, and change can occur, which can lead to a more fulfilling and balanced life.

Do you ever feel like your child is speaking a different language? From the moment they are born children reciprocally interact with their environments and learn as little explorers. They may not yet have the developmental capacity to verbalize what they need, want, feel or know but, they do communicate and express themselves through other, non-verbal methods such as play, art, sports and learned behaviors. As a parent , approaching your child with a spirit of learning from them through use of their language, by listening and observing is essential in the positive development of your mutual relationship.

I offer clinical assessment and mental health treatment for children (birth-18), family therapy, and parent education and coaching.
I work with children and their caregivers around issues related to anxiety, depression, life adjustments/transitions, relational problems, behavioral concerns, school difficulties, grief/loss, self esteem, parenting challenges, and family conflict. I enjoy helping children gain insight into their experiences through psychodynamic play therapy and supporting parents' understanding of their child's emotional needs and behaviors. We all internalize our early experiences, and it has an impact on how we parent and relate to our children. When we are triggered from our own past, it can disrupt our ability to connect with our children.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
