I am a Black,
male
therapist originally from Columbus, OH. and now living in Raleigh, NC. I find it a great honor counseling with clients who are just dealing with life's many transitions to doing therapy with those clients that are facing challenging diagnosable mental health issues. I mainly utilize therapeutic techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (e.g. Ellis’s ABC model, thought journaling, cognitive restructuring, etc.) but I also use techniques from Solution Focused Therapy, EFT, DBT and Multisystemic Therapy. I have found that I prefer a person-centered approach, though I will still use goals, contracts and homework.

I believe I am especially good at helping
men
who might find therapy intimidating.
I enjoy working with clients who seek to grow emotionally, relationally and spiritually. I believe therapy is an opportunity to come alongside others to help them heal and grow. I am relational in my approach. I believe that people have been broken in relationships and that we are healed in the context of relationships. Over the past 19 years I have had many clients reach their goals and experienced transformation through the counseling process. There is no greater privilege than being able to walk beside people in their healing journey. Evening and weekday appointments available. Contact me via phone, text or email.

Have you reached adulthood but don’t have the sense of belonging or fulfillment you thought was supposed to come with it? Something so basic has been missing for so long you feel stuck and embarrassed to talk about it. You are not alone. 1 in 10
men
will experience anxiety or depression but less than half will seek treatment. Life can be a hell of a thing but as
men
the expectation is to just deal with it. Maybe you are just entering into the adult world and realize you will be making decisions that will forever alter the course of your life and want a no pressure place to talk about it.

I view the therapy experience as a directed partnership where strategies are used to directly impact the areas of your life that are distressing to you. Whether it is depression, self-esteem issues, anxiety, problems in marriages, work situations, and many other problems we face and no matter if you are in a dark and difficult place right now, therapy can make a dramatic difference. Incorporating new or different understanding with continual application of new approaches, your emotions, thoughts and very life can be better and more enriching than you might realize. I look forward to hearing from you.

If you are at a crossroads between who you've been (or been told to be), and who you long to become, I am here for you. My clients come to me because the old narratives they've been living by no longer fit, and it's time to write a new chapter marked by honesty, authenticity, and abundance. Together we explore concerns related to sexual and gender identity, religious or spiritual concerns, life transitions, relationship concerns, depression, anxiety, and more. My approach is laid back and collaborative, and designed to give you space to be heard, understood, and affirmed as we explore your unique needs and goals.

Some things in life can feel really big and overwhelming. Working with a therapist can help you develop skills to make those 'big' things feel much less daunting. Taking a person-centered, humanistic approach to therapy is important because everybody has a unique story, identity, culture, and goal. As your therapist, my role is to help you discover what works for YOU, in the context of your own life. I am here to help you unpack, understand, heal, grow, and ultimately build your own 'life toolbox' to use when things feel really big again.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
