I specialize in
grief
/
loss
and also offer counseling for anxiety, depression, and self-worth.
My introduction to counseling started well before I became a clinician. As a widow raising young children without the support of a husband/father, life was overwhelming and, initially, felt impossible to bear. Fear, anxiety, depression, anger, and sometimes debilitating emotional pain worked overtime to leave me feeling hopeless. The decision to reach out for help changed my life. It was empowering and provided the needed tools to not only survive but to thrive. Now, with over 12 yrs of clinical work, I look forward to working with you to provide an experience of empowerment as you grow through what led you to seek support.

Feeling stuck sucks. And getting unstuck can feel so daunting - impossible even. Life can often feel like it just wants to drag you down and swallow you up. But hey, listen, you've made a huge step today just by being here. I hope you reach out as I would be honored to work with you. I work with a variety of clients and issues but have found a great deal of success working with individuals struggling with anxiety and depression. I also work with individuals grappling with

I have a heart for serving adults, adolescents, couples and families dealing with significant life issues such as the
death
of a loved one, chronic illness or pain, issues stemming from past trauma, parenting children with special needs, or managing chronic mental health conditions such as ADHD, anxiety and depression. I believe that it is helpful when a therapist has a personal understanding of the areas in which they specialize. I have personal experience with all of these circumstances, allowing me a level of empathy and insight that may not be possible otherwise.

Have you experienced a
loss
, change, or transition that has left you thinking, “this isn’t how it was supposed to be” or “no one understands”? Because of this, you feel hopeless, or afraid you aren’t going to be able to go on. Maybe you are caring for someone with a chronic or terminal illness and you feel exhausted and angry, and then almost immediately guilty for feeling that way. When you try to talk to others, they tell you to "think of the good things", which then leads you to feel more anger and frustration. You are tired of feeling like this.

Grief
can be so overpowering. Not only are we so very sad, and long to have our loved ones with us, but we are also faced with issues, burdens and concerns that need resolution as a result of their
death
. Anxiety mounts, questions as to our own purpose come knocking on our door, and peace needs to be once again found.
Grief
opens the door to our very own soul. It requires that we examine ourselves, our relationships and our beliefs in a new light.
Grief
shows up as anxiety, doubt and fear and can make our lives feel uncertain and unstable. When
grief
has you feeling overwhelmed, counseling is a self-support resource for healing.

Working with a therapist should feel safe, and that is one of my top priorities. Some of my clients have had therapists before, and some are brand new to therapy. My ideal client comes with a desire to release themselves from pain and move toward a better sense of self in the process. Most of my clients are working through previous trauma (childhood and adult), have experienced
loss
, and many belong to a marginalized community. Some of my clients benefit from long-term therapy, while others engage in brief therapy to help get back on track to a better quality of life.

My areas of clinical focus are, mainly veterans, first responders, trauma, substance use,
grief
/
loss
, spiritual, and existential issues.
I entered the counseling profession to support individuals that are having difficulties facing life’s challenges. I have found that many people struggle not because they are not capable of overcoming them, but because they do not have the support and/or encouragement they need. I believe that as humanity becomes “busier”, life becomes more complicated affecting relationships and how we see ourselves fitting in the world. Life is often full of difficult and complicated experiences that are difficult to overcome, especially without support. Ultimately, these difficulties distract us from pursuing what enriches our lives.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
