I fully understand how overwhelming life can be at times, and believe that everyone can benefit from reflective and compassionate support. I believe that therapy is not "one-size fits all", therefore I tailor the process to the unique needs of each client. However, at the core of all of my work is a strengths-based approach. Sessions focus on self-awareness, altering negative thoughts, self-esteem building, and challenging my clients in a non-judgmental and empathetic way. My passion is working with teenagers, college-age adults, and young adults. If you feel like we would be a good fit, let's connect! I can't wait to talk to you.

As an attachment-based therapist, I specialize in trauma & emotional pain.
Emotions like anxiety, sadness and shame are so overwhelming that it feels like your body could shatter from all of your feelings. A painful childhood, challenging relationships, loss or another distressing experience has left you feeling hopeless. . You've never been able to really explain what feeling abandoned is like, or why it's so hard to trust, so you feel more isolated in being misunderstood. You have some regrets on how you've responded or acted in the past while you were just trying to survive or feel connection.

I pull from Attachment-based theory, Experiential Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Emotionally Focused Therapy to assist clients in processing their past, while advocating for them to walk their life path in the most authentic version of themselves.
Let's face it, relationships are hard. Whether it's a significant other, family member, friend, co-worker, or even ourselves, it can be difficult to find meaning in the ways we try to communicate. Navigating the world of emotional connection with other humans can be a challenge, especially if we haven't always had success at understanding even our own personal emotions. There are so many different parts that make us whole, and my goal as a therapist is to help my clients safely explore and accept those various parts with empathy and compassion.

As a play therapist, my goal is to provide a safe and therapeutic environment for children and adolescents to express themselves and heal using their primary language: Play. Although appropriate for adults, traditional talk therapy can prove difficult for children and adolescents. By utilizing play therapy, I'm able to build a strong and safe therapeutic relationship, a cornerstone to change and healing. In addition, I provide supervision for licensed counselors seeking the Registered Play Therapist credential. Call today for current availability!

My name is Thorne (they/them) and I am a white, queer, non-binary licensed clinical social worker associate (LCSWA) offering both individuals and couples/relationship therapy in Durham, NC. My work is grounded in fierce compassion and a belief that everyone is capable of healing and feeling like they belong. My style is gentle, attentive, playful, and person-centered–drawing from relational, narrative, and attachment-based therapy approaches.

Hi ! My approach to therapy is based on individual needs, with an affinity for individuals struggling with Lifestyle issues, as well, as those navigating life’s many challenges. My own traumatic illness, at age 15, equipped me to persevere, in spite of insurmountable odds, including multiple near death experiences, and excruciating work, back to a “normal” life. I desire to help others struggling with their Relationships (with self, and others), and to become the best versions of themselves. I wholeheartedly believe in achieving one’s own potential, and in, “meeting” people where they are. I’d LOVE to help you, too. . . !

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
