I am experienced working with individuals (age 13-50), couples and families who are experiencing issues such as: ADHD, Behavioral Disorders (ODD/Disruptive Disorder), Mood Disorders (Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety), Trauma (PTSD, Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault), Self-injury, and Compulsive Disorders as well as family conflict resolution.
Are you looking for something to be different in your life? Do you want to change your life situation, solve a problem, make a major decision, or gain a better understanding of what is happening in your life or relationships? Through counseling, I will provide a person-centered and cognitive behavioral perspective. This means I view counseling as a process by which I help to facilitate my client's exploration and identification of their needs to assist them in making changes in their cognition and behaviors, which will result in the attainment of improved life satisfaction and self-acceptance.

As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I am trained in taking a family systems approach, meaning that I will often explore how your childhood impacts who you are today.
When navigating life, you may work hard to hold everything together externally, yet internally, you struggle with feelings of inadequacy and disappointment. Whether it manifests as anxiety, challenging relationships, disordered eating, or low self-esteem, you're wanting some sort of relief.

Some of the modalities I weave into our work include accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy (AEDP), internal family systems (IFS), attachment theory, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), narrative techniques, and mindfulness.
Finding a therapist is awkward. I get it and I appreciate the energy it takes to start your search. Most of the people I work with are adults whose anxiety, depression, and developmental trauma have become barriers in their everyday lives and identities. Many have worked hard to appear as if they have it all together, but the fear of failure or being “found out” stalls the deep connection they desire with themselves and others. I find that what my clients believe are innate flaws in their character are actually intelligent coping responses that were once protective but are no longer helpful in the context of their current lives.

Life is full of curves. There is no one straight line to a meaningful happy life. I raised my family and then made my way back to college to finish my goal of completing graduate school. Most recently, my focus has been caring for older adults and working with teens struggling with depression, anxiety, self-harm and other mental health issues both in-person and virtual settings. I also have an advocacy background in domestic violence and sexual trauma. The process of therapy can be unpredictable, especially when you realize how strong you really are and maybe just needed a little clarity to take your next steps to a happier life!

Therapy is a collaborative process. It involves the client, the therapist, and the experiences & relationships that have shaped us. The reasons that bring you to therapy are unique to you. It can often be a path full of reflections, questions, and challenging decisions. Folks who have experienced relational/attachment challenges may describe themselves as an empath, intuitive, a people pleaser, or a cycle breaker. This might also feel overwhelming, lonely, and confusing. My hope is that this is a step in a direction towards peace & insight while providing comfort knowing that you no longer need to take additional steps alone.

I provide guidance for clients with a variety of mental health concerns including anxiety, OCD, depression, traumatic events, challenging childhoods, and feeling overwhelmed, stressed and “not good enough,” but most importantly, I enjoy helping folks navigate the challenges of being human in a world that is constantly telling us how we’re “supposed” to be. I strive to create a warm, non-judgmental and down-to-earth environment for clients to begin sharing their life experiences, expanding self-awareness, shifting perspectives, and letting go of unworkable patterns in order to move in a more meaningful and intentional direction.

Do you want to feel at understood in your relationships, but you struggle with communicating emotions deep down? In your relationship, you want to deeply understand one another, break out of unhelpful patterns, and feel the energy you once had. You might not even remember a time things didn’t feel this way. One thing is for sure: you’re ready to feel confident in making changes. You’re ready to enjoy meaningful relationships without feeling the need to over-achieve. You’re ready to take the courageous step towards vulnerability. Most of all, you’re ready to go from complacent to passionate.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
