I work with adults who are tired of feeling exhausted, wired, or stuck in worry at night, and who are ready to try a kinder, more science-based approach.
In our first session, my focus is on getting to know you and what brings you in, at a pace that feels comfortable. I will ask about your sleep, your daily routine, your health, and history with stress or mental health, and what you most hope will be different if therapy is helpful.

We often avoid discomfort, but emotions like anxiety serve a purpose until they become overwhelming.
When you feel stuck or your coping strategies stop working, I provide a safe space for the collaborative work of healing. I view therapy like two people climbing separate mountains: while we are both hikers, my perspective allows me to see the rocky terrain or hidden paths on your mountain that might be hard to spot while you're climbing. As an expert on yourself, you bring the map; I provide the tools to help you navigate it more effectively.

You might be dealing with anxiety, self-doubt, or pressure to “figure it all out,” especially when it comes to school, career, or life direction.
Before becoming a therapist, I worked as a career counselor at NC State, supporting students with career exploration, job searches, and major life decisions. I often incorporate that experience into our work, especially for clients who feel stuck or uncertain about their path. Clients often describe me as approachable, supportive, and easy to talk to.

Some common issues I work with include relationship stress, communication skills, parenting, family conflict, mood disorders (depression, anxiety, etc.), personality disorders, grief and loss, life transitions, stress and coping skills.
I believe that every person has the ability to grow, heal and change. As a counselor, I provide a space of nonjudgmental acceptance and authenticity which invites clients to show up exactly as they are and to be valued and supported in all aspects of their identity. I aim to partner with and empower my clients, utilizing the strengths and skills they already possess, to work toward their goals for healing and growth. My counseling orientation is grounded in a family systems approach, though I also draw significantly from attachment theory and person-centered counseling.

Do you have big dreams for your life, but find that self-doubt sneaks in and shrinks them down? Does “I’m not good/attractive/smart/strong enough” sound all too familiar? Maybe you struggle to trust yourself or others. These doubts and beliefs aren't innate- they are acquired. Societal messages and life experiences can shape the way we see ourselves and the world. We all have a universal need for safety, love, nurture and belonging. When those needs go unmet, we can find ourselves bound up in painful beliefs that keep us feeling stuck.

Learning to break free from old life scripts, anxiety, fear, grief, trauma and depression is possible.
Welcome to my practice. My goal is to meet you where you are and help you navigate your way to a more peaceful, meaningful and purpose driven life. Facing the pain of current and/or past hurts and challenges can feel overwhelming. I, too, have personally walked this road and know that healing and peace are possible. Being in toxic relationships and stuck in old patterns can take an immeasurable toll on a person’s mental, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being, oftentimes leaving a person feeling stuck and ruminating - not knowing who they are in their own skin.

I help adults and children struggling with insomnia, circadian disruption, nightmare disorder, and sleep-related anxiety.
Sleep is the foundation of everything, yet most people who struggle with it get generic advice that doesn’t work.I’m Kevin Harrison, LMFT and CCSH, a behavioral sleep specialist who treats insomnia, circadian disorders, nightmare disorder, and pediatric sleep using evidence-based behavioral approaches. If you’re exhausted by exhaustion, lying awake, waking at 3 a.m., dreading bedtime, or if your child can’t settle without a battle, you’ve found the right place. No pills. No guesswork. Just behavioral science that works.

Anxiety Therapists
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
