Most therapists are good at what they do. They are caring, kind, compassionate, and capable. Most importantly, I hope you find those qualities in the person you are looking for, whether or not I am that person. I believe that what distinguishes me is my 25+ years of experience working with people across the lifespan, from all walks of life, and with many unique and not-so-unique histories, experiences, and concerns that they bring to therapy. My work is about helping people better understand how they got here, where they are at this point in their lives, and where they would like to get to.

At the end of the day, relationships matter & I believe they are at the core of our success. How we interact with one another in every setting & how we treat ourselves is crucial to navigating through life. When we love ourselves, we are able to think positively, create & reach goals, take responsibility, understand things we can & cannot control, treat ourselves with compassion & have confidence. When one of these relationships if lacking or does not exist, we are suseptible to a plethora of mental health & life struggles.

Here on the Outer Banks of NC, some of us comb the beach looking for bits of glass, that have been softened by time spent in tumultuous waters. Sea glass started out intact and then by some misfortune or someone's carelessness, ended up adrift and eventually broken at the bottom of the sea. Like sea glass, you, too, are a treasure, waiting to be found. Rather than feeling invisible, unimportant, or damaged, I can assist you in discovering who you really are-your inherent value, beauty and resilience. I have extensive training in the area of trauma treatment.

Oftentimes in life, we feel powerless in our relationships, our lives, and even over ourselves, despite the efforts we make. I help individuals, couples, and families struggling with anxiety, depression, grief, and familial and relational distress, which can leave us feeling disconnected from who we care about and who we want to be. Clients and I work together to generate compassionate spaces to be present and live our values to break free. Through evidence-based practices, we will work collaboratively, building a meaningful life to not just exist, but thrive within ourselves and with those whom we hold and cherish most dear.

Hi there! I am the therapist behind KD Therapy. I value people, I value relationships, and I believe none of us can do this alone. I spent years working with domestic violence survivors in rural North Carolina and active-duty service members during and after the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns. I have also worked with patients who have experienced and survived cardiac events. Through all of it, one thing became clear to me: suffering is suffering. The circumstances may look different, but the human experience beneath is the same, and the way people cope with it deserves compassion, not judgment.

Thank you for taking the first step by shoring up the courage to find me here. “Smooth seas do not make for skillful sailors.” This African proverb so appropriately explains the therapeutic work we will do together. Metaphorically, as we identify the issues and curiosities you bring into counseling, we become the seas; as we work together to explore and notice the things surrounding us, we develop a therapeutic alliance; we then become the sailors. We navigate the waters using therapeutic tools; we practice in a safe space, and build capacity in you, the soon skillful sailor. Reach my website: www.counselingteaandtherapypllc.com

Finding the right therapist can be difficult and scary. Telling someone else about your feelings and needs can feel overwhelming. Because of this, it is essential you feel comfortable with your therapist. Research suggest that a good working relationship with your therapist is the most important factor in judging whether or not therapy is effective. This is the primary reason I offer a free phone consultation. Please call and ask any questions you have! I welcome the opportunity to work with you and your family and want to make sure you feel it is a good fit.

I am not a one-size-fits-all therapist. I draw from several evidence-based approaches and use what actually fits the person sitting across from me.
Most of my work is rooted in Internal Family Systems (IFS), a model that helps people understand the different emotional patterns and protective responses that show up in daily life. That critical inner voice. The part that shuts down under stress. The anxious response that fears rejection. These patterns make sense when you understand where they came from. And once you do, things start to shift.

Feeling out of control of your emotions? Our ability to be intentional in shaping our relationships can be compromised by unproductive mind patterns limiting our ability to be deliberate in how we manage ourselves when emotions are running high. Free yourself from your past, become the author of your own story. As a marriage and family therapist I work systemically with individuals, couples, and families harnessing the power of our relationships to heal. Systemic therapy assumes that disfunction exists in our interactions with others, people are not "sick" or broken" and therapy optimizes our important relationships.

Love fresh air? Me too! I often take sessions outside—on walks around our business park or sitting in the shade under a tree—because a change of scenery can help us see solutions more clearly. I help people work through anxiety, depression, and life’s stressors by noticing unhelpful thoughts or behaviors, focusing on tangible strategies, and taking small changes that make a big difference. With a background in family counseling, I understand communication and relationships, so I can help you navigate life while keeping the focus on your growth.

Men's Issues Therapists
Is therapy for men different than it is for women?
Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.
How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can men prepare for therapy?
Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.
What should men know about the process of therapy?
One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
