I believe we all have the potential to grow through challenges. Rather than living in distress, we can find ways to ease through the difficulties of life. Through my work with cancer patients, I developed a therapeutic framework based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to help clients with various issues move from distress toward peace. In addition, I understand that one size does not fit all, so I use an integrative approach that draws from several disciplines.

We have transitions in life that make coping difficult at times. I believe that we all need a safe place to express ourselves. Therapy does not have to be sitting down talking about your childhood. (Although it might include this.) I like to use therapy to help a person find motivation and meaning in a sometimes hectic world. Whether you are dealing with grief, divorce, relationship problems or feeling the pressures of daily living, having a place to express yourself through words, art, and expressive play can release the tension and increase your coping skills.

A candidate at the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas in Chapel Hill, Dr. Boyce has a deep appreciation of the complexities of the mind as well as the impact of early experiences and relationships. Psychodynamic and psychoanalytic theories offer a comprehensive understanding of human nature. As opposed to other models that aim to solve a particular problem or target symptoms, psychoanalysis gets to the heart of the matter. Dr. Boyce provides therapy that addresses the whole person, helping the individual to develop inner capacities that can improve relationships as well as foster a richer, more meaningful life.

Hello and thanks for stopping by. Sometimes when life's challenges arise, we can become sad, frustrated, and overwhelmed. Sometimes these difficulties are new to us; at other times we continue to struggle with issues that have followed us from long ago. Whatever the case, I am eager to partner with you to overcome obstacles, and I listen with respect and without judgment. It may be that you also need a gentle nudge, and no topic is considered out-of-bounds during our time together. I want you to live a better life, and I am always honored when a client reaches out to share their journey toward greater peace and well-being.

Life can bring waves of transition; many are excellent, and others are more complex. I enjoy partnering with older adults and their families to provide support and explore ways to improve the quality of life for all. Typical areas of exploration may include retirement, end of life, grief, loss of independence, caregiver stress, role reversal/confusion, depression, isolation, anxiety, and life inventory. I offer a holistic and client-centered approach embracing empowerment, narratives, and strengths to rebalance joy and fulfillment as life transitions.

I collaborate with individuals seeking counseling for various reasons, including improving personal relationships, addressing specific issues, fostering a better balance, or developing a deeper awareness of life's purpose. While counseling can be both enjoyable and challenging at times, the ultimate goal is positive transformation in relationships with others and with yourself. I have experience working with individuals dealing with life transitions, relationship difficulties, grief/loss/bereavement, anxiety, depression, and disordered eating.

Alzheimer's Therapists

What are the first-line treatment options for Alzheimer’s disease?

The first-line treatment for Alzheimer’s disease is often medication, which may be prescribed based on the severity of the disease. These include cholinesterase inhibitors, memantine, or a combination of the two. Behavioral treatments can help people cope with emotional distress, such as anxiety or anger, and explore lifestyle changes related to housing, caregiving, sleep, and finances.

When to seek treatment for Alzheimer’s?

It’s best to seek treatment at the first signs of dementia. Early warning signs of Alzheimer’s include memory problems, such as forgetting appointments or directions, as well as trouble concentrating, paying attention, retrieving words, and carrying out daily household tasks. An early diagnosis can help people slow the progression of the disease with treatment and plan for the future in terms of housing, support, finances, and legality.

Are there specific medications to treat Alzheimer’s?

Medications approved by the FDA to manage symptoms of Alzheimer’s include galantamine, rivastigmine, and donepezil for mild to moderate Alzheimer’s, and memantine, donepezil, and the rivastigmine patch for moderate to severe Alzheimer’s. These drugs can help manage the disease, but no drug currently cures the disease. Medications recently approved by the FDA, such aducanumab and lecanemab may slow the disease course, but aspects of their effectiveness are still debated.

Are there natural treatments for Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s disease cannot be cured via natural remedies (nor via medication), but some lifestyle habits can help forestall it or slow its progression. Lifestyle activities that can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease include regular exercise, a healthy, well-rounded diet, stimulating cognitive activity, time spent socializing, adequate sleep, and stress management as needed.
