Anger Management Therapists in Lexington, NC

Hunter Adams
Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate, MA, LCMHCA
Lexington, NC 27292
Clients may seek therapy for anxiety, depression, anger, grief, stress, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, or major life changes.
With children, I use play therapy to help them express themselves, process emotions, build coping skills, and work through concerns in an age-appropriate way. With teens and adults, I draw from CBT, ACT, strength-based, and person-centered approaches, adapting therapy to each client rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Have you ever thought "why am I here," "everyone would be better off if I wasn't here." Well, you are not alone! As hard as it may be to believe in this moment, you are not here by accident and have a purpose! In my practice, I believe that therapy is a "joint effort" with you and I working together to discover your path to inner peace and emotional regulation to see yourself as strong, powerful, and worthy of love. It is completely normal to feel overwhelmed, unseen, unheard, or just stuck, regardless of who we are or our profession. I see you and I hear you, let me walk with you on this journey of self-discovery.

As a therapist my job is to meet you precisely where you are, to listen about where you’ve been, and to help process the emotions you're feeling. The last few years have been tough. Tougher than we ever thought possible. This has caused chaos, stressful home life, and violence to increase in our communities. If you have been affected recently by these things, I want you to know, you are not alone. You do not need to struggle any longer. Healing begins the moment we feel truly seen and understood.

Life can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. I work with teens and adults who feel overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure how to move forward. Many are dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, or major life transitions and want real tools not just someone to listen. They come to therapy ready for change but may not know where to start. Through a supportive and direct approach, I help clients build coping skills, improve emotional regulation, strengthen self-worth, and create clear, realistic steps toward lasting change.

Anger Management Therapists
How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
