Every client is an "ideal" client. My job is to be present with you in a way that, together, we facilitate your discovering the life that fits you where you are at the times of our meetings. Our work will involve your discovering how you block creating that life and what results and experiences you create with those blocks and then experimenting with new ways of your living. I continue to work with people with "minor" every day issues and "major" mental health issues.

Our lives can be full of wonderful experiences that we hope to never forget and awful experiences that we would love to forget. Learning to live a life to the fullest with these contrasting experiences can be so emotionally draining. It is so easy to get stuck in a dark hole of depression and anxiety and start to believe that your situation will never get better. However, it is my belief, that when someone chooses to pay attention to their thoughts, emotions and their actions, a positive change can happen. Remember…you are not your thoughts!

Clients come to me feeling drained from the constant balancing act of overwhelming stress and emotional burnout in a toxic society. They struggle with old wounds that dilute daily life and relationships, making it feel like a herculean effort to live the life they truly want. They know what hurts the most, what problems feel crucial, and what experiences remain deeply buried. Together, we work toward the changes they desire, cultivating confidence, freedom, and peace on their healing journey.

ACCEPTING NEW CLIENTS (Telehealth - available) Discussing personal challenges can often be difficult. The fact is that "life can be difficult", and there are times we all requre help "aligning our compass". Finding a therapist can be an important step in one's search for a "life worth living". For 10 years I have worked to develop compassion and empathy in assisting individuals and the families that have solicited my support in meeting the challenges and stressful situations that seems to be an unavoidable part of life.

Through life experience we all construct beliefs about who we are and what we are capable of; some beliefs are helpful and some are not. Unfortunately for many of us, negative, unhelpful beliefs become the default thinking style or lens through which we view and experience the world. By integrating elements of various therapeutic approaches we will work together to reduce the power that unhelpful beliefs (and the connected feelings or "felt sense") hold over your life direction and experience; the goal being for YOU to begin steering your life in the direction that you truly want to go.

I offer psychoanalytic psychotherapy - a warm and supportive approach that accompanies people through a deeper exploration of unconscious thinking, including dreams and long-held relational patterns that are outside of one's awareness. Often people are stuck repeating something or attracting the same experiences again and again. The psychoanalytic process is carefully designed to help you move through these stuck points and work deeply with complex aspects of the self so you can emerge to more genuinely appreciate your life. Through it, you should notice significant changes in how you understand yourself.

My ideal client is any adult looking to create change in their life by being willing to change how they relate to their internal thoughts and feelings. This has a wide application for individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, grief, life transitions, interpersonal difficulties or just the stress of a post-pandemic world. I have a particular passion for working with those who have experienced developmental trauma and are looking for new ways to relate to themselves and their pasts.

I hold a core belief that no one wants to be “bad” or do “bad.” Keeping this in mind, I prefer to highlight strengths and focus on how we learn and grow in our challenging moments. Therapy isn't one-size-fits-all, and I don't come in knowing exactly what will work for you. My goal is to approach each session with curiosity and to collaborate with you on a unique plan that pulls from your strengths and creativity. My style is direct and action-oriented. I won't just ask, “How does that make you feel?” I'll ask, “What are we going to do about it?” I’m trans, queer and neurodivergent, and I love working with folks of shared experience.

Anxiety, Addiction, or Depression might have you feeling like you've lost touch with the life you really want. You might feel alone in all this, but I promise you're not. I help people just like you learn concrete tools and strategies to achieve the life you want. It's ok if you aren't sure what you want. We can figure it out together and build a roadmap for how to get there. The most important thing that a client needs is a therapist who is nonjudgmental, compassionate, relatable, and down to earth - so I work hard to embody these qualities.

Are you seeking to connect deeper with your intuitive self? I dream of a world where humanity tunes into intuitive sense for guidance. As a culture we have ventured far away from the infinite intelligence of “the still small voice within” and formulated an over reliance on the analytical mind. My ideal client is individuals struggling with addiction, anxiety, impulsivity, and/or codependency who want to connect with the intuitive wisdom that has been blocked by fear and shame. The goal in facing these blocks will be to increase feelings of self love, presence, and serenity.

If you’ve always put others’ needs before your own—leaving you exhausted, anxious, or disconnected from your sense of self—you’re not alone. Many of my clients come to me feeling drained by the weight of unspoken emotions, unmet needs, and relationships that leave them feeling invisible.
My approach focuses on helping you:
Uncover what you truly need and feel, beyond the noise of others’ expectations.
Advocate for yourself with clarity and compassion, even when it feels uncomfortable.
Rebuild relationships on a foundation of mutual respect- not resentment or self-sacrifice.

As a psychodynamic psychotherapist with over 35 years of experience I believe you are coming to me as a fellow pilgrim, journeying toward healing that comes when deepest concerns are shared safely with another human being. My approach invites reflection and the creation of a space where you can move at your own pace. When you tell me your story which may be painful, even terrible for you, I desire to stay with you and provide emotional presence especially when the going gets rough.

Deciding to try therapy can be one of the most important actions a person can take, and I honor the feelings of hope, uncertainty and anxiety that this can create. While I am a
skilled therapist, you are the expert in your life. I will try to make the experience both
helpful and worthwhile through my supportive listening and interest. When I’m with my client our relationship is most important and I try to cultivate trust and feelings of safety and comfort that they can say everything and anything. Said a past client: "Brian is fantastic. He worked with me on a variety of issues that I've been struggling with."

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
