Hello, my name is Bob Risavi and I am a licensed clinical social worker. I work with adults from 21 to 100. I try to help them cope with and solve problems within their everyday lives. To do this I use several styles of therapy depending on the individual and their particular needs. There is no such thing as a one size fits all strategy. For example CBT therapy is very effective with many patients but psychodynamic therapy may be more effective for other individuals depending on circumstance. The bottom line is, I shape the therapy sessions with you to yield your desired result the best way possible.

I work with individuals and couples to confront the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors they exhibit which make them feel "stuck" or "out of control." I help clients find the answer to the question "why do I keep doing the same thing over and over without being able to change?" by looking at the internal narratives which repeat beneath the surface driving their dysfunctional behaviors. Specifically in the areas of sexual addiction, relational recovery, and marriage counseling, I help individuals and couples to heal from the pain and move toward healthier ways of being.

Perhaps you desire to work on a specific concern you may have. Or maybe you are seeking help with moving from a stuck place. As a Somatic Therapist, I can help and guide you to listen not only to your mind, but to listen to your body as well, by exploring the perspective that your mind and your body work and function together, as you are a whole person. Over 25 years of Clinical Social Work experience has given me the privilege to hold a healing space for many people. I have noticed that for many of them, just having an opportunity to feel safe allows them to explore their concerns and discover how to grow, change, and heal.

Ready to stop managing the noise and finally start living? You are exhausted from carrying everyone else's luggage. On paper, you are high-functioning, capable, and the one everyone turns to. But inside, the mental noise feels like a car alarm that has been blaring for days without stopping. You have tried analyzing your thoughts, policing your anxiety, and forcing yourself to stay calm, but your heart is simply tired of the old way of surviving. You don't need another clinical checklist or a rigid set of coping mechanisms. You need a space where it is safe to completely drop your armor.

Anxiety, stress, depression, trauma, pain, shame, or patterns of disconnection may loom over our lives. Sometimes our current way of being ourselves feels stuck. Perhaps something in us feels unhealed, unwell, dead or disconnected, incapable or inaccessible. There can be so many obstacles to thriving as ourselves. If you can relate to this, I say with compassion: “Welcome!" There are innumerable ways to speak of a rich and fulfilling life, but I believe one thing required is a feeling of wholeness and integration in our way of being. I work with individuals and couples who want to cultivate deeper connection and fulfillment in life.

Therapy is about growth and learning new skills to navigate life - it shouldn't be focused on fixing things that are wrong or solving problems. As a therapist I view myself as a guide for life's journey, including providing tools to achieve goals and experience gratification. For psychological assessment/testing, I reveal profiles of strengths and weaknesses, not just scores and diagnoses. I want clients to emerge with a deeper understanding of themselves, of how their minds work.

The attitude I cultivate in therapy is one of openness, warmth, curiosity, and acceptance. I work with individuals navigating discomfort, dissatisfaction, and life challenges, helping increase purpose and stability. I believe there are no right or wrong decisions, and no single “best” life. Our choices and desires are meaningful and our responsibility. I also consider how social, cultural, and economic systems shape what we label as “problems” and impact individual, community, and environmental well-being.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
