Facing life's challenges and transitions should not be done alone. When you encounter issues arising from lifecycle changes, relational turmoil or any other challenges that invoke a crisis or grief, it is important to have genuine and empathetic support to guide you without passing judgment. As a spouse of a retired veteran, I have over 20 years of experience adapting to the lifestyle challenges that the military community encounters. I have helped many families successfully cope with the military lifestyle, relational struggles and raise special children.

Are you constantly on guard? Your mind won't turn off and you can't sleep at night. Your heart beats faster than your body can manage. Anxiety and depression take up residence. The world around you moves differently and you feel trapped in your mind and situation. No one seems to understand what this is like. You are not crazy! You just might be enduring the effect of trauma. Up until now, you have been surviving the best way you can. If you are growing tired of the mental and emotional prison, desire to live a better quality of life and defy your trauma, then we should talk! There is always hope and a path forward.

Time has passed, and you are still in pain, not knowing what to do.
I have spent 20 years walking alongside those who grieve, and have traveled those tumultuous paths myself on several occasions. There is not one grief that resembles another, or one path for all. The truth is that this journey cannot be taken alone, as one needs support, empathy, and someone who can help them get unstuck if they stumble on a pitfall.

A client once told me that finding the right therapist is like finding the right romantic partner and while therapy is not intended to be a long-term commitment, this metaphor highlights the need for trust, safety, and compatibility in both kinds of relationships. You need a skilled, experienced therapist who can build trust, create a safe space for you to work through hard things, and has the knowledge to help with your specific challenges. My style is direct, validating, and collaborative. If this resonates with you, I would be glad to chat to see if I am a good fit for your particular therapeutic needs.

I am particularly passionate about working with individuals experiencing burnout, chronic pain, and disabilities.
I'm a licensed clinical social worker! I have a straightforward, client-centered approach to therapy. My goal is to create a supportive and collaborative space for healing. My practice is trauma-informed and leans heavily on the principles of harm reduction and radical acceptance. I am trained and experienced in multiple therapeutic modalities, including EMDR, acceptance and commitment therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and Rogerian person-centered therapy. My theoretical approach is eclectic but centered around pragmatism and incremental forward motion. I’ve done my own work, and I bring a steady, grounded presence to therapy.

At times, it may be the ongoing strain of chronic pain or a life transition that has left you feeling unsettled, even if things appear “fine” from the outside.
My approach is collaborative, grounded, and focused on developing a genuine understanding of your internal world—while also helping you make changes that feel meaningful in your day-to-day life. Together, we look at the patterns that have developed over time and begin to shift them in a way that is both practical and sustainable.

The pressure is relentless. So is the feeling that you're facing it alone. Maybe there's a constant hum of anxiety, a loneliness that lingers even when you have people around. You've tried things. They help, until they don't. Fair warning: I'm not what most people expect. But then again, neither are most of my clients. The bigger surprise, for most of them, is that something finally works. The medication that was supposed to fix it — didn't. Suggesting more journaling about it felt like an insult. I get it.

Throughout our life's journey, we encounter a multitude of experiences. Some may contain extreme joy and happiness, while others can manifest feelings of doubt, sadness, anxiety or questioning if change or healing is possible in our current circumstances. During these difficult seasons we need the courage and perspective to explore challenging questions and the willingness to listen to the answers that emerge. My goal is to empower my clients and develop a rapport which promotes the confidence, skills and change agents needed to progress towards a direction that nourishes emotional and physical well-being.

Chronic Pain Therapists
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
