Over the last almost 20 years, I have worked in various mental health settings, ranging from inpatient hospitals to in-home counseling with children and families.
My number one goal as a therapist is to assist individuals with identifying and implementing healthy ways to cope with difficult situations. Gaining an outside perspective can often open your eyes to new and different solutions to problems you have been struggling with for a long period of time. Everyone needs a safe space to vent, brainstorm and ask for help without judgment.

I have experience in a variety of issues such as, anxiety, depression, stress, relationships and family issues, anger management, self-esteem, trauma, children issues, and more.
No matter our age, race, socioeconomic group, educational level, sexuality, spiritual affiliation (or non-affiliation), or cultural backgrounds we all face the inevitable challenges of life, none of us are exempt from this. Most times we are able to navigate victoriously through these experiences, but sometimes our challenges can leave us so overwhelmed that we have difficulty understanding our situations and coping with our circumstances which makes it very difficult to find a way to overcome them. Ultimately we all want to "live our best life" and sometimes we may need to reach for a trusting hand to help us manifest it.

I work with adults primarily; however, I also work with children and adolescents on the Autism Spectrum.
I chose to become a therapist after working as a classroom educator for 21 years, because I saw that the needs of my students were not being met through the educational system or through their family system. Today, we all face a variety of emotional issues that are difficult for to express, name, and discuss. Many people feel as if no one is listening or will listen to them, especially adults on the Autism Spectrum who already struggle with communication. I want to help empower all people on the Autism Spectrum and their support systems.

In addition to counseling adults and adolescents, I have extensive experience in psychological and educational assessments with adults, adolescents and children .
What brings people to counseling? A sense that something's not right. The desire to stop feeling sad, depressed, worried or angry. And the desire to explore issues with an objective listener who has no other agenda than to help do what's right for you. I believe my clients are capable, competent individuals who come to me because life's circumstances have challenged their current ways of coping. My goal is to assist my clients in feeling better as quickly and efficiently as possible, and to help them develop enhanced life skills and gain a better understanding of themselves.

I primarily work with adolescents/young adults going through a variety of problems (depression, anxiety, substance abuse, etc). Over the years I have specialized in working with teens who are self-harming and having a difficult time adjusting to life's stressors. I do not work with just the adolescent/ child . I feel it is a family issue that must be addressed by helping the entire family unit build supports and effective coping mechanisms together to move forward in a healthy manner. I specialize in working with Borderline Personality Disorder.

Taking the step to start therapy can be difficult and filled with mixed emotions; everybody deserves the best chance in the game of life.I'm here to help you play the cards you've been dealt-just with a little more intention and strategy. I am a LCMHC, CRC, and a facilitator for MHFA. My years of experience providing individual, child /couple/family, and completing various psychological assessments allows me to keep my focus on my client, their needs, and the ebbs and flows of life. It is my hope to help the person's life become more manageable, instead of life managing the person.

Child Therapists

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
