Trauma can come in all shapes & sizes - we believe that trauma can be at the center of many concerns like anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, performance issues, & addiction, to name a few. We also love working with little ones, teens, and their families! Fears & worries, behavior problems, family & life changes, school & relationship struggles - these are just a few reasons why we see younger people & families.

I work with children, adolescents, and adults who are seeking to better understand themselves and their interactions with the world around them. Through counseling, I often support individuals who are neurodiverse or are going through big life changes (career changes, move to new town, loss of loved one, living during a pandemic). Through counseling I support individuals as they gain a stronger sense of themselves and a deeper understanding of the control that they have over their own life.

I would like to acknowledge and congratulate you on the courage required to take the steps necessary towards achieving your desired goals. The counseling process can be intimidating as it requires you to entrust your current behaviors, thoughts, feelings and concerns to a licensed professional in the hopes of relieving problematic symptoms. My goal is to assist you in this process by providing a warm and empathetic environment in which you are able to discuss, explore, and decide the direction you would like to take. Relationships are hard and take a lot of work. This is especially true if you have a history of abusive or codependent relationships. You may have found that issues from your past creep up and affect your present relationship. You might often push others away because you don’t want to be hurt again. Or you always worry about abandonment. You put all that you can into your relationship, and it is not getting any better. You’re either ready to end things now, or you’ve already ended them. You’re ready to do the hard work of putting your life back together. I’m ready to join you in that work.

You are sick of feeling the guilt, frustration, and a constant need to “fix” yourself. You’re tired of yo-yo dieting and hating yourself. You want the guilt and shame to go away so you can feel normal. You feel like you gain weight just by looking at food. You crave sugar all the time. It seems like others don’t experience this struggle like you do. You don't feel in control of your emotions or your body. Work and home responsibilities make things seem even harder to control. Life feels like a vicious cycle you can’t escape from. This cycle is exhausting and you are ready for a change.

The problems you're experiencing may seem overwhelming, but they can provide an opportunity for you to change your life for the better. Seeking out help is an important step toward dealing with the problems that have kept you from thinking, feeling, and relating to others the way you want. I enjoy helping individuals, couples, and families who are experiencing a variety of challenges. My two primary areas of focus and expertise are working with clients who are experiencing problems in their relationships, and those who are going through a transition in their life that is creating stress.

If you’re here, you’re likely finding that something has been getting in the way of experiencing the sexual pleasure and/or relationship connection you want. Maybe it’s needing to integrate a new understanding of your sexual or gender orientation. Perhaps you’re not sure exactly what brings you pleasure or how to ask for what you want. Shame or past trauma has been preventing you from finding freedom. All of these dynamics can leave you feeling lonely and disconnected from yourself and your partner.

I remember many years ago, while in graduate school, a professor stating that the client may not remember the therapist's words but will remember the connection or alliance that was forged. This statement speaks to the fact that fundamentally it is the working relationship which drives change. Therefore, it is extremely important that you find a therapist who strives to "get you."

I am a psychotherapist who has been on a continual healing journey myself. And I welcome you to yours. In my life and work, I’ve come to appreciate how much of our well being depends on the strength of our relationships. Connecting to people we trust for support and relief from distress is critical. Yet, when we have heartbreak, loss, stress, or trauma, we may be too afraid to reach out to the very people who could comfort us. How often do you share something vulnerable with someone and feel heard? Sadly, for many this rarely happens, leading to depression, poor self esteem and problems coping. But there’s hope and help.

It can be exceptionally difficult to go through daily life, and I've found that to be true for most (if not all) people I know and love. There are so many difficult things that can pile up on one another, making it complicated to maintain relationships, wellness, work, and other things you might value. Sometimes it's hard to "ask for what you need" because sometimes we have no idea! I'm here to help even when that question feels hard to answer, and our work can start with exploring goals you have for yourself. The resiliency I see in clients is awe-inspiring and beautiful, and I offer several approaches to help them get there.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
