I have been providing counseling to adolescents and adults for 38 years. I work primarily from a cognitive-behavioral orientation but believe the most important aspect of counseling is the therapeutic relationship. My style is warm, engaging, straightforward and interactive. I will help you identify and build on your strengths and explore new ways of coping, thinking, acting and interacting with others.

I am often asked why I chose to be a therapist. My answer is always the same. I understand what it feels like to go through something difficult, new, or challenging alone. Therapy is my passion, and serving as a guide/supportive presence to help clients reach their goals is my sole purpose in treatment. I believe that every client is an expert regarding their life experiences. Therefore, therapy is a collaborative effort, so I am always open to feedback from clients in order to provide the best service for each individual.

I strive to provide a private, informal and comfortable office setting where my clients can expect to be treated with respect and dignity while facing life's challenges. I work with children, adolescents, adults, families, and couples. Welcome to my profile - I value helping clients work through current concerns, as well as past issues that can impact daily life. The approaches and techniques that I use are well established and chosen with purpose to fit the needs of each individual. I appreciate having the opportunity to help clients work toward and maintain positive changes in a safe, trusting environment where clients can discuss concerns at their pace. A blend of clinical and educational experiences at UNC Chapel Hill (BA, Psychology) and UNC Greensboro (MS, Counseling; PhD, Sport & Exercise Psychology) has helped equip me to work with a wide range of clients.

As a therapist with over 40 years of experience, I specialize in working with individual adults, couples and families. Working from a family systems perspective, I build on my clients' capacities to bounce back from hard times. I engage each unique client in a way that facilitates their being able to challenge their patterns of dealing with stress, anxiety, and depression. Clients have shared that they appreciate the empathy and understanding that I bring to our work together.

I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor who helps individuals from all walks of life who are struggling to be the best versions of themselves. This could be due to fragile self-esteem, loss of faith, body image, relational conflict, or social/systemic issues. I have advanced skills in treating trauma-related disorders due to single (e.g. sexual assault) or complex trauma (e.g. childhood abuse, neglect), death, bereavement, or loss. I use attachment work and relational constructivist theories to help those who are yearning to be more connected with their hearts, bodies, and minds.

Stewart Middleton II, PhD is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, National Certified Counselor and Board-Certified Tele-mental Health Service Provider in the state of North Carolina with 3 years of intern experience and 2 years of professional experience in rehabilitation services, substance abuse counseling, and other DSM-5-related mental disorders. He provides psychological assessment and therapeutic care to adults and couples seeking help with finding purpose in life, emotional regulation, clear interpersonal communication, and healing from past trauma.

My hope as a psychotherapist is to build a relationship based on trust, respect, and hopefulness with my clients. I view psychotherapy not only as a way to address symptoms, but as a gateway to more joy, wholeness, and pleasure in our lives.

There are times in everyone's life when navigating day-to-day struggles and problems seem more than we can do on our own. Sometimes, we just need someone to talk to who will listen, not judge, and help us to find our way again.

When describing my work as a therapist, I often say that therapy is the art of having awkward conversations. The things that come up during therapy sessions aren’t often broached around the dinner table or at social gatherings, so talking about them can feel overwhelmingly weird. No one wakes up in the morning and says, "Hmm. You know what I'd like to do today? Spend an hour talking to a stranger and tell them all my deep, dark secrets." Sometimes, though, life circumstances, interpersonal difficulties, and emotional troubles make these conversations necessary. This is where I come in.

I specialize in mental health, trauma, substance abuse, and co-occurring disorders. I am Certified in EMDR which we use to process memories that may trigger a trauma response or the desire to use drugs. Some of our Trauma/PTSD processing has included Sexual Assault, Grief, Domestic Volience, In the line of Duty-Service Workers, TBI, and the loss of Employment. I work with clients with Depression, PTSD, Anxiety, Bipolar, and Schizophrenia. My approach is tailored to you and your specific needs. What I have learned through life experiences is that overcoming these battles can be easier when you are not walking alone down the path.
