I utilize DBT for skill building to regulate emotions, lessen distress & chronic pain, increase mindfulness, and build interpersonal effectiveness skills.
Therapy can be a powerful way to make changes in your life. Having a therapist that you can rely on, should offer consistent support for those changes. My approach is motivational to help you identify ways to positively meet your needs by shifting your thoughts and behaviors. I often include a somatic approach to connect sensations in the body to the mind for healing. I will not expect you to relive any past trauma, but will support your readiness to explore areas of resiliency.

People often think psychotherapy is only for crises. However research shows that therapy is one of the best investments you can make for life satisfaction and growth. In addition to therapy are other modalities that support healing and growth. Some of these holistic wellness tools include exercise, mindfulness, tai chi and yoga. I have a rich background in the application of mindfulness to promote healing and growth, and have experience integrating tools such as Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, DBT , CBT, Hypnosis and EMDR. I also find authenticity and humor essential for healing and use both liberally.

I am grounded in a strengths-based approach, but incorporate Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Mindfulness, and mediation to address issues surrounding family conflict, parent-child relationships, anxiety, substance use, co-occurring disorders, behavioral issues, anger, and everyday stressors.
Change can be difficult. Therapy provides support as you adapt to life's countless changes and curveballs. As a clinical social worker, I have spent time working alongside teens, young adults, and adults as they work through issues varying from hospitalization to exploring substance use and its effects on daily life, behavioral issues, and family conflict. I draw extensively from Maslow's hierarchy of needs and help clients explore their immediate basic needs and safety while addressing love and belonging, self-esteem, and spiritual aspects of daily life.

I utilize many modalities to facilitate healing including psychodynamic, process-experiential, cognitive-behavioral, dialectical behavioral, narrative, interpersonal, and expressive approaches.
At some point during the complex journey of life we all experience stuck points, emotional suffering, and sometimes an emotional crisis. It my deeply held belief, however, that we all have the innate ability to recover, heal and thrive. Providing an environment that facilitates healing and resilience is tremendously life-affirming work. I trust that each one of us has tremendous wisdom and strength. In partnership, we identify growth areas, goals, and strategies. Although it is essential that therapy is nurturing and nourishing, it is also hard work. I admire anyone who has the courage to push themselves out of their comfort zones.

I utilize a wide range of therapeutic techniques, such as CBT, DBT , EMDR, and others.
In my experience, I find that I am a good fit for clients who are interested in exploring their own internal processes, are at least mildly self-driven, and are into exploring existential truths. I've been helpful to those who deal with depression, anxiety, self-image issues/negative self beliefs, trauma, grief, and other needs.

Intrusive thoughts? Feelings of dread? Relationship issues or communication challenges? Trauma, anxiety, attachment wounds, & other mental health challenges all have a way of coming out in areas where we don’t want them. Therapy can help by providing a safe space to process everything from daily stressors to deeply traumatic events, break generational patterns, & learn healthy coping skills along the way. In my practice I believe in a person-centered approach putting you in control while using an eclectic mix of CBT, DBT , polyvagal theory, trauma focused CBT, & psychodynamic therapy; all from an attachment and trauma informed lens.

I will utilize a person-centered approach, recognizing that you are the expert in your life while incorporating evidence-based practices that include DBT , ACT, and CBT.
Sometimes we feel stuck. We’ve tried on our own to heal, grow, and learn but we still find ourselves in the same patterns that have led to a continuous cycle of confusion, shame, and hopelessness. You are not alone. If you have found yourself questioning your worth, your relationships, or your identity, I am here to help. Most of us know, logically, that hardship, distress, and unwanted emotions are a part of life. But sometimes we were not given the correct tools to manage these difficult experiences. Together, I believe we can connect back to your authentic self so that you can lead the life you want.

My style draws primarily from existentialism, CBT & DBT , narrative, positive, and relational psychology, harm reduction, and mindfulness.
Life is a funny thing. And often terribly complicated. During our journey in this world, we often face challenges that can feel too big or ongoing. Whether it’s with chronic feelings of anxiousness, depression, emptiness, issues about sexual orientation, gender, or ethnicity, relationship conflict, sleep disturbances, substance misuse, school or work issues, or any combination of those, many of us struggle silently. But you don't have to. It can help to work with a therapist with a deep understanding of what it’s like with some of those struggles and who is passionate about helping others learn to thrive despite these adversities.

I believe we all have times in our lives when we become overwhelmed and may need help from another person. If this is your first-time seeking help, it can be intimidating to choose a therapist and begin the journey to healing. My goal is to create a safe place for clients to explore challenging areas of their lives. I work with clients who are experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, substance abuse, relationship issues and life transitions. No matter where you find yourself in the life journey you will be welcomed and provided with compassionate support.

I believe therapy should be interactive and experiential, incorporating DBT , mindfulness, and creative art elements into therapy.
Currently Accepting Clients ( Telehealth Only)-My name is Vanessa Guerero and I am a clinical therapist with Winter to Spring Wellness. Prior to being in Asheville for almost a decade, I originally hail from Miami, Fl. I am a proud daughter of Cuban immigrants and a first-generation college student. As a teen I had my own battles with physical and mental wellness, difficulties with acculturation as well as struggled with cultural stigma in regard to mental health care. Through my own work, I have been able to find healing and am now honored to support others who struggle with their own mental wellness and similar issues.

Depending on your needs & goals, I may incorporate evidence-based techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, & Motivational Interviewing.
Compassion is a basic human need that often goes unfulfilled. When we don’t get it from others, it’s no wonder we are our own toughest critic. We refer to ourselves in harsh terms we would likely not use with friends and family. We feel stuck, alone, hopeless. Reaching out for help is hard, but continuing the emotional suffering is even harder. My clients have described me as approachable, compassionate, & non-judgmental. My goal is to help you explore & process unhealthy patterns of thinking and behavior while learning new healthy ways to regulate your emotions, communicate with others, & to stand firm in your decision-making.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

DBT is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
