trauma,

, and life transitions.
There are times when life overwhelms us. We become anxious, depressed, scared or even angry. These feelings may hijack our best efforts to realize our potential. My goal as your therapist is to focus on your strengths and challenges, helping you let go of patterns that no longer work as you gain insight and move into new possibilities for your life. I adjust my approach to the client's presenting problem, strengths, and treatment goals. Although the first step is the most difficult, the journey can be well-worth the effort.

Kelly D Taylor
Marriage & Family Therapist, MS, LMFTA
I do not have an ideal client, except to say I enjoy working with people who are willing and ready to take steps towards feeling better and more emotionally healthy. Sometimes, these steps include some hard work, inc. retraining their thought processes. Many of my current clientele are women or men experiencing depression,
grief
issues or anxiety in adjusting to life transitions. These life transitions may include
death
of a loved one, chronic illness, adjusting to marriage/divorce, and parenthood, etc. I find that most people are resilient and possess inner strength they may not always recognize.

grief
and
loss
, and utilize a
grief
-informed lens in all of my work with clients.
Having spent over a decade working in University Counseling Centers, I enjoy working with individuals at points in their life of growth or transition, whether forced upon them or chosen. Change is hard, when it's chosen and even more so when it's not. Having support can empower you to use the momentum created by change to create the life you want for yourself, instead of feeling overwhelmed and paralyzed by all that life changes require. Whether in a moment of distress or a desire to grow beyond the past, I value the opportunity to support clients in finding choices that allow them to live a more balanced and genuine life.

Yet sometimes we find ourselves being overwhelmed by shame, stigma, pain,
grief
, depression, anxiety and fear which can get in the way of living a full life.
Life can be full of great experiences and feelings, but it can also be full of difficult emotions, hard relationships, and traumatic experiences, which can often negatively impact your self-esteem and your experience in life. My goal is to help people work through these experiences so they can find enjoyment in their life, grow in their relationships, and increase their self-esteem. The hard things in life don't have to hold you back.

Such issues include: Depression, anxiety, health issues (stress, pain management, smoking cessation, obesity), divorce recovery (for adults and children), adoption, low self-esteem, abuse survivors, PTSD, ADHD,
grief
, couples problems and psychological testing.
My goal as a psychologist is to increase self-awareness and create positive change in a nonjudgmental environment. Psychotherapy can relieve emotional distress, improve one's quality of life, help process painful events and increase self-awareness. Unfortunately many people are conflicted about the decision to get help and may see psychotherapy as a sign of weakness. It has been my experience that people who are unhappy for whatever reason and choose to go to psychotherapy are being assertive, healthy, and courageous in the handling of their problems.

Grief Therapists
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
