Everyone is responsible for protecting and nurturing their mental health. Navigating through difficult life experiences can manifest stress, unhappiness, anxiety, anger, etc. Sometimes, we develop harmful ways to cope with these life experiences such as isolating ourselves, lashing out at others, abusing substances, among other things. It can be difficult to take the first step and reach out for therapy/counseling. However, taking that first step means that you're prepared to figure out how you can improve your circumstance and move forward. It's my mission to offer you support through your process of achieving mental wellness!

Anxiety and
OCD
are my areas of expertise. While at one point your energy, thoughtfulness and persistence served you and helped you to accomplish things, perhaps you've noticed these patterns and behaviors take on a life of their own. Now you might be more fearful, doubtful, and engaging in avoidance. What used to bring you joy is now being perceived as a chore or a threat. You want peace of mind and freedom to enjoy what's right in front of you without being consumed by all the what ifs and other worst case scenarios. You recognize that the anxiety that used to serve you is now being used against you and you're tired of it.

Self-compassion can be tough and many of us are living our lives feeling disconnected from our bodies. More times than not, we have no idea how we got here. It's helpful to understand the obstacles and societal pressures to understand ourselves. Gradually, together, we can work to identify the barriers and move toward the life you want to be living.

I help folks who are stuck and anxious. And, because life is hectic, I'm a leader in 'virtual visits', secure sessions from your own home. I have 20 years of counseling in depression, anxiety, grief, and more, but that's not the point. If you are reading this, you already know you're facing challenges. I help you get perspective on your life and build a tool kit to manage stress and make better decisions. I'm proactive, solutions-focused, and know that a sense of humor can often help us get the darkest parts of ourselves back into the light.

Anxiety and depression can be suffocating and often restrict you from engaging in life in the ways you want to. They are quite successful at creating a cycle of disappointment and desperation that convince you you’re alone and helpless. While that inner voice of yours may be wreaking havoc and demanding that you rethink that situation or decision for the umpteenth time, let me remind you that you are not broken nor are you alone. Everyone has an inherent ability to achieve personal growth and overcome the ravages of anxiety — we just need some guidance at times.

I help people create insight, identify challenges, and learn about themselves so that they can feel empowered. I also help clients challenge self-defeating thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors so that they can rekindle a passion for life. The path toward a life filled with love and happiness starts with a single first step: self-acceptance. Sounds simple doesn't it? The right mindset can make all the difference. I believe in people's innate ability to accept and heal themselves. I'm the guide to help you discover what works for YOU.

No matter what might bring you to counseling, it is my hope to help create a warm, open-minded, empowering counseling environment in which you feel accepted and able to make progress towards your counseling goals. I'm grounded in person-centered counseling (which emphasizes empathy, acceptance, and authenticity) that aims to meet each client where they are. I also often utilize CBT, Emotion Focused Therapy, Solution-Focused, and Psychodynamic Therapy depending on clients' needs. I consider it a true honor and privilege to walk alongside clients as they pursue health and healing.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists
How long does OCD treatment take?
OCD is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.
What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.
Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.
Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
