A person coming to see me may be experiencing a significant life change such as a separation or divorce, a move, a career change, the deployment of their significant other, family problems, issues involving their child's behaviors or legal trouble, or problems in relationships with their spouse or partner. Others may seek psychotherapy to help themselves grow, deal with anger, or overcome patterns of behaviors or ways of being with others that don't work any more. Some people seek psychotherapy because someone close to them insisted they call me. I enjoy working with all of these presenting concerns.

You want your child to thrive. We all do! You give your children opportunities and experiences so they can succeed in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in the arts. Counseling can help your child build the social-emotional skills needed to be successful as a person. I’ve been helping kids and families find peace and wellness for years as a school counselor and, now, as a therapist. Each child is an extraordinary individual. Using a child-centered, cognitive behavioral approach, I will support your child’s journey towards personal growth and positive change. I’m excited to get to know you and help your family thrive.

Sometimes life experiences can be overwhelming and paralyzing, with moments of not being able to function in healthy ways. This type of dysfunction can make you feel stuck with no apparent way to move forward, resulting in unhealthy behaviors, cognitions, and emotions. Fortunately, there is a way forward. Mental health counseling has been scientifically proven to be effective in helping to reduce and eliviate symptomologies related to these areas. If you or someone you know are experiencing dysfunction either spiritually, emotionally, behaviorally, or psychologically we can work together to help you identify and achieve your goals.

Having over forty years of experience in a variety of settings including family services, middle and high schools, adoption agencies, family life education agencies, and employee assistance programs, has given me a broad spectrum of knowledge and experience.
If you are wondering what to do now that SHIfT has happened, (that's my acronym for life has changed (shifted) and you don't know what to do), if you're feeling scared and anxious, or so down in the dumps thinking you'll never feel joy again, let's talk. I know that sometimes we all need help to cope. I have helped clients feel better, sometimes as quickly as three sessions, empowering them to help themselves. Clients say that what they appreciate most about working with me is my compassion, understanding, and ability to truly listen.

I recognize the impact that trauma has on individuals and their family .
Serving children and families has always been a passion of mine. As a preschool teacher I recognized that many families have a great need for intervention and support. The needs that I saw, directed me towards metal health counseling and my true passion to work with and support children. I believe in the strength of the relationship between parent and child, and their natural ability to self-regulate and achieve success. I aim to guide parents and children to communicate effectively, understand their own internal motivation and to strive for stronger relationships.

My degree is in marriage, couples and family counseling, but I have experience in trauma and substance abuse.
As a little girl, I always wanted to help people. As I grew up, that desire became even stronger until I decided a career in mental health was the best way to fulfill that desire. That desire was further cemented when I became a Christian and saw how people were hurting. Throughout life's circumstances, I developed a passion for marriages and families although I do see clients on an individual basis. I view every client as unique and will treat each client as such. My personal belief is that counseling should be a safe and productive place to share, and I make every attempt to make every effort to make each client feel that way.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
