Working with a therapist can help children and teens learn how to handle past, present, and future challenges. Everyone is unique, so the techniques I use with individuals may differ, but one thing remains true: everyone has the ability within themselves for a great potential for change and growth. However, some challenges in life can cause this ability to be hindered. As a therapist, my job is to facilitate growth by meeting the child or
teen
where they are at and letting them know they are seen and heard.

We believe that everyone deserves mental health. At times when the responsibilities of life appear to be overwhelming, and you contemplate what it is you are wanting to do, it can help to have a therapist who understands and can help you find your path. We understand what it means to struggle and how the histories of our lives can greatly impact who we are today and how we are facing our challenges. We welcome clients who desire to gain insight into who they are, move forward in the struggles they are facing and a willingness to embrace change. We accept people where they are, no matter where they may have come from.

I am passionate about working with children, adolescents, and their families. I specialize in play therapy and solution focused therapy. I look forward to helping you or your child work through the every day struggles and sometimes overwhelming struggles of everyday life. I approach counseling from a holistic perspective and feel the child will benefit more from counseling if the family unit is healthy. This is why I invite the family to be a part of therapy and work to make the family a healthy place for the child/
teen
to grow and mature.

I've had an opportunity to work in an
adolescent
facility, substance abuse center, and community outreach providing mental and behavioral treatment to individuals and families.
We all face difficult challenges or situations that affect our way of life, who we are, and our social/family environments resulting in hurt, pain, depression, anxiety, feeling of grief/loss, and need to be validated and accepted. No one should go through these challenges alone as I meet you where you are in life's travels and assist you in navigating these difficulties with my years of experience and education. My practice includes individuals (children, adolescents, and adults), couples, and families. If you are looking for a supportive, non-judgmental counselor, give me a call.

Whatever brought you to my corner of the internet, I am glad you are here. Therapy, counseling, or whatever you prefer calling it, used to be a taboo topic but today, it's commonly known as an integral part of our healing journeys - healing from whatever it is you have dealt with in the past and/or issues you are currently dealing with. Life can be hard. Being a
teenager
today can be hard. Adulting can be hard. Parenting can be hard. Losing loved ones is hard, whether it was an expected or unexpected event. Living during a pandemic can be hard. Doing more than one of the above at the same time can be really hard.

I am honored to be of service to you. I know that trauma and substance abuse and addiction can wreak havoc in one's life. Many of client's find themselves faced with challenges of having to restart their lives during mental challenges and addiction; some may have to fight to regain custody of their children; many of them have co-occurring mental illness that has lead to substance abuse and/or addiction. For some, addiction comes by way of biological, environmental, and social influences, but from my experience, I have learned that mental illness was present before addiction became a factor. We are each designed uniquely. Deep down, at the core of our being, we all have a longing for wholeness. The way we experience this basic desire in our day-to-day lives may differ. Maybe it’s a sense of belonging when we experience significance with someone or are accepted. Maybe it is a hollow feeling of disconnection or loneliness, or perhaps it is a compulsion to ease pain in an unhealthy way. Whatever the case, the desire for wholeness is basic to our design and the human experience.

It is my belief that within each of us, the mind, body, and spirit work in unison to maintain a sense of balance and wellness. However, there are times when we may encounter challenges and unanticipated events that may cause a disturbance in these areas, which may be evidenced by undesirable thoughts, feelings or behaviors. I have the required training, licensure and experience to practice individual, group, and marriage/family counseling with all age groups encompassing a general range of presenting problems/concerns.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
