I am accepting new virtual clients in the state of North Carolina. Call or email to set up an appointment. The road to wellness begins in the mind; but this is not a journey you have to face alone. Everyone needs a little help navigating through life from time to time. I enjoy working with creative types - musicians, artists, writers - however I am able to connect with clients of various backgrounds and interests. The kinds of issues I routinely treat include ADHD, anxiety, panic, depression and other mood disorders, relationship struggles, school/career related concerns, family conflict, LGBTQ+ concerns, and self-esteem issues.

Adulting is hard! There are so many demands of us…..trying to balance work, home life, and personal well-being can be miserable. Our brains tell us all kinds of unhelpful messages: “You’re not good enough, or You messed that up.” We often worry that our colleagues and friends are judging us the same way we speak to ourselves. Can you imagine if you talked to others the same way that you talk to yourself? These voices often lead us down paths that are unhelpful, or counterproductive. We might pursue education, careers, and other advancements to fill the whole in our hearts that make us feel less than, or unworthy.

Being a person can be hard. Living a life that best suits you as an individual is a work in progress. Along the way, there are undoubtedly challenges. Sometimes, our experiences leave us confused, overwhelmed, and in need of some support. As a therapist, my role is to help understand where you’ve been, where you’d like to go, and help you get there. It’s possible to move from getting by to feeling you have agency over your own life and choices. I specialize in working with challenging life events such as trauma, major life changes, relationship distress, and chronic illnesses. I also work with C-PTSD and Narcissistic Abuse recovery.

Whether you are a parent, a couple, a young adult, or a teen, life can be overwhelming at times, especially if you have difficulty with ADHD, Autism, Social Anxiety, or Giftedness. So many of us feel stuck in life. Burdened by the weight of our personal history, and constrained by our fears and self-doubts about the future, it can feel increasingly constricted. We struggle to find our bearings as we're confronted with the consequences of prior choices, many that don't make sense to us when we look back at them. Therapy allows you to slow down, to lay everything out before you. It's a chance to honestly and compassionately address the parts of self you'd like to change and to remember and reclaim the parts of self you've lost, particularly the ones that made you feel alive to the possibilities of what could be.

I look at your concerns in the context of your childhood experiences, your current family and your life environments. These patterns repeat themselves. People pick up on cues that communicate what you expect out of them and what they expect out of you. These patterns are no accident, you create them! The good news is you can change them! You are like a magnet, and I help you identify what you're attracting and we change your patterns of attraction to healthy ones. It takes practice, but it can be done, and it will affect the rest of your life!

Are you stuck? Are you unsure of how talking alone is going to change your experience of anxiety, depression, or other patterns in your life? Many of us would do anything to get that continuous voice in our head to be quiet. And, many of us are walking around with traumas that we've had for years. These experiences are part of life; however, at times, can become overpowering. I offer integrative techniques designed to help you reprocess, release, and reinvent parts of you that are struggling. I have years of experience working with grief. I also specialize in working with other therapists and caregiving professionals.

I believe in the natural healing capacity and basic wisdom of all human beings. Layers of confusion and unconscious wounds can disconnect us from our true selves, and we may end up feeling bad and acting in ways that hurt our relationships- with ourselves, with others, and with this magnificent planet. We become hard and out of touch with our lives and callings. Real, deep change is possible when we face ourselves and our challenges with honesty, willingness, and compassion. If you're struggling with existential confusion or you're feeling consistently sad, anxious, irritable or numb, I'd love to help.

How long have you been trying to fit a mold that isn't yours? How has that been working out? What if instead of focusing on changing and fixing, you were able to find acceptance of the "you" you've been trying to fix? I work to cultivate authentic connections with my clients where genuine acceptance is central. Meaningful change springs from that acceptance. I love helping others shift into new ways of connecting with themselves and create meaningful paths forward.

Do you feel stuck, stalled, and overwhelmed? Do you feel shame, grief, or isolation? You might feel debilitating worry, have chronic sadness, or even struggle to get out of bed every day. You probably feel lost, unsteady, and lonely. Perhaps you don’t know why you feel so empty and dissatisfied, but nothing you try seems to produce long-term changes. Or, maybe you are aware of a particular issue causing you pain, such as an unfulfilling job or relationship, and carry deep self-doubt or shame. This discomfort is the part of you that is longing for something different. But another part feels unsure and uncomfortable with change.

Sometimes we are submerged in complicated feelings that are confusing and scary. This is actually a window into some of the core truths of our inner lives, of internalized relationships, longings, and past experiences. I accompany people through a deep exploration of this inner life and provide a supportive space to understand the unconscious, move through stuck points, and emerge to more genuinely appreciate your life.

Self Esteem Therapists
When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.
What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.
What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.
How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
