Sleep is the foundation of everything, yet most people who struggle with it get generic advice that doesn’t work.I’m Kevin Harrison, LMFT and CCSH, a behavioral sleep specialist who treats insomnia, circadian disorders, nightmare disorder, and pediatric sleep using evidence-based behavioral approaches. If you’re exhausted by exhaustion, lying awake, waking at 3 a.m., dreading bedtime, or if your child can’t settle without a battle, you’ve found the right place. No pills. No guesswork. Just behavioral science that works.

I'm a middle-aged human who loves to support others along their journeys to greater states of purpose and well-being and who has turned that instinct to help others into a career. I've got experience with working with senior citizens with dementia, people with chronic illnesses and pain, and I've worked in the prison system as a therapist as well as in a gender-affirming care clinic. If I could choose one word to link my broad range of work roles, it would be: advocate.

Healing that takes place with another person present is sacred. From just starting your journey to feeling confident in your abilities, we will create a safe, supportive environment for you to explore yourself. I have worked with clients who weren't sure about starting their therapy journey yet and others who bring questions, requests for homework, and new ideas. Much of counseling is a "choose your own ending" adventure novel, and when you are up for those twists, I'll be right beside you so you do not have to walk through the dark alone.

Morning and Late Afternoon Availability - I am a psychologist with over a decade of clinical experience. I work with parents who are stretched thin, individuals managing ongoing or chronic health concerns, college students, and healthcare professionals who give endlessly to others while quietly running on empty themselves. Many of my clients are high-functioning on the outside but internally exhausted, anxious, or overwhelmed by the constant demands and uncertainty of life. I often use a laid back narrative approach to processing your concerns. We'll identify where we are getting stuck and the direction we'd like our life to move.

As a native of Iredell County, it is my privilege to counsel individuals who live here and in surrounding areas. Past experience includes working with adults of all ages, couples, children and teens, including an alternative school setting. I have also counseled individuals struggling with OCD, ADHD, anxiety, depression, parenting issues, low self-esteem, and developmental disabilities. I especially empathize with the DD population due to personally experiencing many of the struggles faced by having a daughter who was born with Spina bifida.

I know finding support can be hard - from deciding you want to open yourself up to and trusting someone else to be a part of that process to realizing there is something you are struggling with. Sometimes the struggle is even finding a therapist who has availability (which can be discouraging in itself, I know!). But realize every step is one in the direction to you being a happier you, and you’re worth the time and energy it takes! Feel free to take a look at my website to learn more about me. I work with adolescents and adults and have specialized training in Brainspotting and Trauma Focused CBT therapeutic approaches.

Life in general, can be challenging. I believe in the healing power of telling your story in a judgement-free environment where you feel safe. Research consistently shows it is the quality of the therapeutic relationship, more than any other factor including the method of therapy, predicting the clients’ ability to use therapy to help themselves and make positive life changes. Therapy does not always solve the problems brought to it, but the best chance for success is when there is a strong therapeutic relationship. To me, the critical foundation of our counseling relationship is a partnership based on mutual respect and honesty.

Chronic Illness Therapists
How does therapy for chronic illness work?
Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?
Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?
No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?
There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
