Everyone thinks you have it together. People would never guess how much you're struggling, or how your brain NEVER shuts off. You're replaying conversations, overthinking everything, carrying everyone else's emotional baggage, and wondering why you can't seem to relax. You're exhausted, but slowing down somehow feels harder than keeping busy. You learned how to survive long before you knew how to rest. If you're reading this and feel like this is you... you're in the right place.

We all long to feel a sense of belonging and connection, and positive relationships are essential in helping us live fulfilling lives. However, old wounds and different communication styles can sometimes prevent us from finding satisfaction in our current connections, leaving us feeling stuck and disillusioned. Life also has a way of pulling the rug from under our feet leaving us feeling lost, broken, and unsure of how we got to this point in our story.

In my view, the relationship of feelings and thoughts to behavior is important in understanding all aspects of our lives, including spiritual awareness. I use a variety of strategies that can help people make sense of their world, strategies that are mostly cognitive and insight-oriented in nature. These strategies are based on the notion that the way people see themselves and the world, influences how they feel and behave. For instance, it may be helpful to examine your family relationships to look at patterns of coping skills. We will talk about these strategies during our sessions and decide what will best fit your situation.

If you’ve ever felt different, misunderstood, or like you don’t quite fit the mold, you’re in the right place. I’m not your cookie-cutter therapist. I’m a little quirky myself and believe therapy should feel real, not rigid. I offer an open, nonjudgmental space where you can show up exactly as you are. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or don’t know where to start, we’ll take it step by step, at your pace, so therapy feels manageable and supportive. I work with individuals navigating trauma, anxiety, depression, life stress, and major transitions, including those who feel too much or too different.

My journey of helping people started when I was a middle school and high school teacher. While working closely with children, I learned about the emotional and developmental issues that they deal with and how it can leave a lasting effect into adulthood if they do not receive help. As a counselor, I use my knowledge, skills, and empathy to help adults and children deal with what they are struggling with and help them increase control of their lives. I look at each individual as their own person who needs individualistic care. Additionally, I incorporate the values and beliefs of my clients to create the most helpful counseling.

I am so glad that you stopped by and took the time to read about me and explore the possibility of working together.Getting started is always the hardest part of any road to change. Deciding who you are going to trust with your information is also an important part of your new beginnings. I want to be supportive of your goals and work together in discovering how you can reach and surpass them. In my time away from being a therapist, the most important thing to me is my family - my wife and three young children - and spending as much of my time with them that I can. I enjoy hiking, fishing, cooking and reading when I have the time.

I appreciate the variety and have the skills to help a wide range of patients, but I'm especially useful with patients who've had problems connecting with other therapists. I'm very familiar with physical and sexual abuse, but also with alienation and with spiritual and emotional trauma. Adoption and attachment issues are also a special interest. I'm trained and certified (Level II) in EMDR and DNMS, trauma-based treatments for people whose developmental needs were not met as children. I have extensive experience working with PTSD and dissociative patients, but also with "plain vanilla" folks -- of varying ethnicities -- challenged by difficult circumstances.

At the core of my work is the belief that healing begins in the context of a safe and supportive relationship. I prioritize creating a trauma informed therapeutic space - one that honors your story, centers your voices, and supports you in showing up as your full, authentic self. I recognize that our individual experiences are shaped not only by personal history, but also by the broader systems we live within - systems that include oppression, marginalization, and inequality. I approach therapy with an awareness of how our identities and experiences within our environments intersect with mental health.

Barry helps couples and men in New York and North Carolina untangle the intersection of intimacy, sex, emotion, and identity, especially when anxiety, performance pressure, porn overuse, low desire, or erectile unpredictability have created distance, self‑doubt, or cycles of avoidance. Sessions are active, structured, and shame‑free: we map the feedback loop between physiology, thoughts, attachment patterns, and relational dynamics so interventions feel precise (not generic “talk”).

Life can be hard & some days are more difficult than others. We could all use a little help with everyday stressors, major life changes & transitions or struggles with mental health or substance abuse issues. Therapy could be the answer to finding your inner strength & peace again. We are all products of our environment & have a story to tell; a path that directed us to where we are now. I believe we obtain the power to heal ourselves by using our experiences as an opportunity to learn, grow & overcome life’s obstacles & everyone should have access to a safe & healthy environment to explore & heal from our hurts, habits & hang-ups.

Attachment-based Therapists
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
